What is a "boater"?

Isn't the benefit of the word "boater", that it is non-specific? And considering how many threads here relate to enduring differences between motor-boatists and sailing-boat-users, anything which allows us all to be referred to collectively, must be refreshingly inclusive.

But yeah, awful word, clumsy and vague. And I had to wear one of those stoopid straw hats for years, at Harrods.

Unfortunately the word 'yottie' is used rather disparagingly by various people, not least those who do actually know what they are doing! I can tolerate many things, but being labelled a 'yottie' is not one of them!

Yotties, for example, might be flying a blue ensign, wearing a battered yottie cap when they are out shopping with SWMBO, and then come alongside with wind and tide from astern!

How about:

Someone who keeps their vessel on a mooring = Swinger

Someone who has their vessel at anchor = Hooker

Someone who keep their vessel against piles = Scrubber

Someone who keeps their vessel on mud = Dylaner

:)
I have a drying swinging mooring, so that could be a Swinger Dylaner, a Swilaner or a Dynger.

Or even a Dylinger.
