What I learned at sea today...

Leaving Alderney for home...I'm sure there was something else I had to check. Bugger. What was it? Engine OK, plenty fuel, oil good, tides good at this end, should be ok at the other end but have a plan b for early/late,plenty food, what the hell was it? Sure I wrote it down somewhere...got the AIS fixed so it's now seeing ships again, even remembered the duty free...bugger it, can't remember.

1 hour later...

"Er skip, I think we've run out of water"...

Oops. My suggestion that we have 24 cans of lager, and those who don't like lager, may wish to drink their own urine, didn't go down that well! Fortunatly found 4L of bottled water but I'll NEVER do that again!

A few years ago we only found out the skipper had made the same mistake when we sipped the tea. The novice crew member who made it had used his initiative when he couldn't get any water out of the tap and had filled the kettle from the tap next to it.

We also found out just how bad tea was when made with salt water.

I took that one to extremes. SWMBO 'Tea anyone?'
Me 'Yes please'
SWMBO 'Do we have milk?'
Me 'Emmm'
SWMBO 'Where's the tea?'
Me 'Emmmmmm'
SWMBO 'The water's not working'
Me 'Emmmmmmmmmmm'
SWMBO 'Hurumph!'
Me 'Cider anyone?'

It was fine though - it was 10:30am.

PS It was the first sail we had as a family on buying our first boat. I have now learned how to provision the boat properly. We have cider, beer, wine, gin and whisky amongst others if it ever happens again.

Not today but... Auto pilots are not always reliable. Left the Boss and our friend on watch and went for a siesta, came back up a couple of hours later. Tried to keep a straight face as I asked them why the sun was setting in the east and oh, look at our pretty wake going round and round :)

The boatyard near Rome where we kept Nereide for several years had tiber-estuary-water on tap! I made this discovery in the same way that you did!

I had a tap learning lesson today - in harbour rather than at sea. Before giving the galley footpump a hefty boot, make sure that the nozzle is pointing into the sink at not directly at one's belly button to prevent an unplanned navel humidifying occurrence.
