Nice to hear you're embarassed about the winch handle. I was always taught to remove it immediately, without even letting go of it in between. This rang true as one of our works foremen used to wrap your knuckles with a spanner if you turned away from a lathe with a key in the chuck! If you complained that he might have broken your fingers, his reply was that the key would have sheared them off.
