In the olden days, I could always count on my MAB needing between 10 and 20 strokes of the bilge pump to dry her out when arriving aboard after a week's absence.

Since having her redecked, the pump brings up nothing more more than gnat's piss.

In the panel's opinion.

• Was the old deck leakier than I thought?
• Has the stern gland shrunk during 12 months out of the water?
• Has global warming caused increased evaporation rates for bilge water?
• Should I replace my bilge pump?

Do your feet get wet now when you clamber ungainlily down into the saloon? If so a new bilge pump may be called for ..or perhaps the valve got reversed during laying up?

i was trying to explain, recently, what a bilge was to a yoghourt pot owner but failed so i think yr post needs some graphical input and, handily enough, a recent edition of Big Brother required the contestant to empty the bilge with a leaking bucket. They failed, of course, but i can't be bothered finding pics of their filthy bilges which .. erm .. makes this post pretty useless ...

Ah..... thats where you are going wrong..... suggest you trade up immediately to something that you can throw away after a few seasons, then you won't have to worry about changing amounts of water ingress over the years....

Seem to have read somewhere recently that you really fancied a AWB?

The answer is (1).

Dusted my bilges on Saturday, as usual. Yes, this is a wooden boat and yes we had had a good inch of rainfall in the week...

It took me years to learn where the stuff was coming from - the DECK!

Now I know, and any bilge water in future will see me chasing round the deck, not fussing over the stern gland packing, etc.
