what happens to a commercial ships logbooks...

When you say 'Marine' I assume that to be the same as 'Deck' and yes we did have Deck Superintendants who acted in the same way with that department. This was with a UK company operating a significant number of small ships ( up to about 5000T) around the UK and Europe. They also manage FG ships but I wasn't involved with them.

Anyone ever find the logbook for HMS Conquerer? (The warship that sank the Belgrano after it had surrendered)

How does a ship surrender to a submerged submarine, especially if it doesn't know it is there?

Re: Didn\'t think Belgrano surrendered

Blessed if I do!

I recall hearing her Commanding Officer give a perfectly clear account of the sinking on BBC Radio 4; as I recall, they located the Belgrano, reported to the task force commander and requested orders. Whilst awaiting the reply they adopted the "safe" position, below the target, had roast lamb with roast potatoes and peas for lunch, received their orders direct from Northwood, moved out to a firing position, fired three Mark 8 torpedoes and sank her.

He took the view that since the Navy had spent years training him to do the job, it was a good thing that he got it right.

At a guess, a company not a million miles from Barrow in Furness, not unconnected with the sea carriage of nuclear fuels and with a Board of Directors most of whom have been President of the Chamber of Shipping?

(no need to answer that if you don't want to).

The company that I work for now has "Marine" (Deck) and "Technical" (Engineering) Superintendents. Not a UK company although the UK company that I grew up in used the same terminology and ran to an Electrical one as well!
