I am using a Standard Horizon HX270e - seems very good and really solid. One question (if anyone knows) "where is channel 37 (M) ? " I believe it should have it but I can't find it
Going from memory, I think it's programmed in as "n1", and M2 as "n2". There was a slip of paper in the box with ours with the info on. Can check tomorrow if you want.
Would also endorse the Std. Horizon HX270E - Only got ours in SIBS, so haven't used it much, but it certainly feels like quality kit, and ticks the right boxes on output power, taking AA batteries if needed, a proper 'off' switch , and being waterproof. Made by Yeasu (sp?) who have been making well-regarded radio ham stuff for years.
Not only is the build quality excellent, the back up is second to none. My icom h/h is from the stone age in this throw away society. icom still support it (17 years old!), though some parts are getting a little scarce.
I have had to go into it to tighten up the aerial and I was pleasantly surprised how strong and well put together these units are, I doubt I would be impressed with the internals of my navman main radio.
I have no connections etc. But I have not seen build quality as similar away from the avionics I used to work on.
PBO tested a range of handhelds up to £200 in Feb 2006. Joint best on test were the Icom M31 and Raymarine RAY101E. These two were unanimously voted best by the panel of six testers.
Standard Horizon HX270E fared OK but there were some niggles over some quirky controls. The HX370E was considered to be a waste of the additional £60. Others tested were Silva Star M-289, Entel HT640, Garmin 725E, Icom M1EuroV, Silva S12.

Having had some contact with IPC journalists, I doubt very much that your 'theory' is correct. However, I tested it by leafing through the pile of about a year's magazines in my office. In all tests in which a Raymarine product was included I found as follows:
PBO May 2006 DSC Radios. Best on test Icom IC-M601, Best Value for money Raymarine 54E, Best Budget Buy Silva S10
PBO October 2006 Budget chart plotters. Best on test Standard Horizon CP180i
YMOctober 2005 Budget DSC radios. Premium product Standard Horizon VM3500, Value for money Cobra MR-F55
YM April 2006 Hand-held GPS. Premium product Garmin GPSMap 276C
PBO Feb 2006 Hand-held VHF Joint best on test Icom M31 and Raymarine RAYU101E
Hardly an overwhelming victory for Raymarine. It is also quite evident that Garmin, Silva, Simrad and many other manufacturers also advertise in the mags and of these Garmin could equally be called a 'major advertiser' with copy on inner and outer covers from time to time.
You know as well as I do, that I can with equal ease cherrypick 5 test "at random" /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif from different magazines over a period of time and show that Raymarine "won" /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif them all outright - or at the very least come top in a subcategory.
