Hi all. I'm an English person living and voting in the West of Scotland, and beautiful it is too. We went for a sail yesterday and, whilst I was putting out the red ensign, I wondered what will happen if Scotland gets the YES vote in September. Presumably when the ensign was used in the first place there would have been lots of Scots in the Navy.

If you are in UK waters you can currently fly anything you want. What happens after independence depends on whether iScotland establishes its own flag state or keeps the UK one (or a variation). Other previously UK flag territories have adopted a version of the British Register and variation of the ensign. Scotland may decide to create its own ensign which Scottish registered vessels will have to use if they go abroad, including into English waters. If you keep your British registry you may well have to fly the red ensign and Scottish courtesy in Scottish waters.

All the above is guesswork, and also guess it is not high on Salmond's agenda - he still has to convince his voters and if successful will worry about such trivialities later.

I guess that the answer will depend on whether you consider yourself and your boat to be English or Scottish and (if you consider yourself/boat to be Scottish) what flagging arrangements the new Scottish Govt will make. They may decide to continue wearing the red duster.

Consideration does not come into it if the boat has a port of registry. It is required required to fly the ensign of the flag state! Just as Tranona said above.

A red ensign with a Saltire instead of the Union Jack - this flag pre dates the red ensign British boats and ships fly, sorry, wear- today.

All well and good if you care about this flag nonsense. Mah wee boatie always has a Saltire flying. Or being worn. Who cares?

Well, except Breton cap wearing, beardy, smock wearing yottie types who care a lot about that kind if stuff...

Now that is good news Wully. But I bet you can't buy a Saltire Ensign at the chandlers.

Maybe not, but I know of a reputable company who would gladly make one for you. Pucker job it will be.

May have to ask them to make me a red duster with Union flag minus St. Andrews Cross....................

8 weeks today, and STILL no-one is giving us any facts.
Please, do not drift this thread to a Indy-rant.

The Scots are voting for independence. What makes you think they will want someone so full of p1ss and self importance like Wee Eck in charge, after all his raison d'être will have been fulfilled ? You never know they might all then vote Tory, after all they must have some commonsense.

Really? I mean a Red Ensign with a Saltire in the corner.
What part of "Oh yes one can" are you having trouble understanding when referring to the Scottish Ensign? (red flag with a Saltire in the corner replacing the other flag) - I deliberately used words of only one syllable in deference to the Sassenachs on this board

Just google Scottish ensign and you find companies who make them to order.
Most boats visiting Scotland tend to use the St Andrews cross as a courtesy flag, however I saw a varition of that as I pasted a Swedish yacht in Kylerhea last week. They had a larger than usual St Andrew's Cross as courtesy flag with a "YES" written across it! They got an extra big wave from us :)
