Any gas that displaces oxygen needs to be handled carefully.Either would be far better than dry powder.
We removed CO2 exstingishing systems from substations due to the risk of activation during routine maintenance. The system was supposed to be locked off so maintenance personnel could not be in the space during an activation. This didn't always happen. Just the same as the guy in this thread who set off a dry powder exstingisher. Mistakes happen. Deaths occur. I don't think a small automatic exstingisher in a very small engine room on a typical yacht is at much risk from a gaseous exstingisher but on larger engine rooms you have to be more careful. My engine room is walk in and quite high volume. I wouldn't want a gaseous system.
