I’m currently looking to purchase a new 4 stroke tohatsu engine for my Shetland 4+2. 80% of my boating is cruising on the inland waterways so not wanting a too bigger engine but equally, I’m wanting to cross the wash and cruise the Humber so will need an engine of suitable size. I’m thinking either a 40 or 50hp. Obviously I will only be on the wash in favourable weather conditions. Thoughts and advice greatly appreciated !

We had a 4+2 with a 40 on the stern the only sea work we did was in the Med , which it went well not sure it would be good in your situation and mine was two stroke , so I would say 60hp .

In a slow boat you will only do the Humber with the tide.
People do The Humber and The Wash in narrowboats but I think they are mad.

What is the most powerful engine that the Shetland is rated to take? Whatever that is then go for that.

The Humber and the Wash are rarely flat calm.

Do you need to consider fuel capacity bearing in mind petrol isn't available at the waterside.
