What engine would you choose?

Pete, You know I think the world of you and enjoy your company emensely but I think it's probably best for everyone if Kim bans you until you produce an invoice for the new boat.
You have given us more deadlines by which you have to have made up your mind than most of us will face in a life time of boating and the issue is a non issue.

Regardign the race in May Gib is clearly preposterous and I would suggest Hamble - Morlaix as a suitable trip. Rough calcs suggest you will only have to refuel twice for the return trip./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: 60 knots

Oh, i'd go for the 60 knot boat, no question - otherwise you might easily find yourself trundling along at 54 knots on the way to yarmouth only to be overtaken by everyone else who'd chosen the bigger engine options which would be a total downer, surely?

<hr width=100% size=1>

was in Zurich the other day, and for the first time, looking at that big calm lake, realised what people meant by a lake boat. As you say yourself, the chances of finding a day calm enough to manage top speed are so small, forget about it. Whether you really get to 40knots fractionally faster than whoever isnt next to you is also irrelevant. If the boat is 22ft long, 5.0l must be enough for just about all purposes unless you tend to add alot of heavy safety equipment. OOPS.. I found a DP a real improvement. Dont go without.

<hr width=100% size=1>

Why not forget about all of those engines, and fit a pair of these ... good for 75kts

atlas5srm.jpg

<hr width=100% size=1>

Thats because they are both the same engine. The 5.7 is just rebored.
I had the 5.0l in my first boat. 25 knots = 3500RPM = 40 litres per hour

<hr width=100% size=1>

Went out on a 20 odd foot cat' with whacking great american V8. Did 75 mph around the Solent from Ocean Village.
Great fun ....... for half an hour.
Came back via Hamble to refuel. Over £200 for about an hour.

Around UK coast the liklehood of being able to maintain even 30 knots in a lightweight speedboat is remote, so why bother? Cruise comfortably in a proper "cruiser" and have a tender that does 30 knots or something. You'd probably have enough left over to treat your young lady to a decent meal instead of those exciting F&C's.

<hr width=100% size=1>

If you can't go diesel i.e Steyr 246 or Yanmar 240 then I would have the Mag 350 or if cruising is your game then the longer stroke MX 6.2L. Both the 350 and MX 6.2 will produce more torque than the 5.0L block for not much more fuel I would think.

<hr width=100% size=1>

Personally i dont think you will notice any difference between the 350 mag or the 5.0L in a boat of 22 feet only going to be about 4/5 mph different top speed and acceleration negligable. the only difference that i think would be noticable if you jump from the small blocks ( 350 mag, 5.7, 5.0 and 6.2) up to the big blocks other than that its just more posey to say you have 350 mags IMHO.

IMVHO and not neccesarily on your size of boat Fuel could be about 10 gph at 3500 rpm and about 25 gph at maximum revs on the 5.7 and could be a couple of gph higher on the 350 mag and one or two lower on the 5.0

What boat is it? is it the larson 220

Go for the 5.0Gxi DP.

When you come to sell down the line this will be the one that sells the quickest - you have the performance / fuel bill ratio about right. Anything over 35kts starts to get hairy if not on a lake.

S..t, even my 20ft 4.3L 170bhp pops out quickly and gives most a run for their money. I think there was ONE day last year where it was that flat and calm I could have wished for a bigger engine. But that was ONE day! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: 4hp Yamaha

Not really an issue for you, is it - being on the Upper Thames. Must be terrifing - a 4hp on the river /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Happy two people have asked now and you seem to be reluctant to tell us what it is ,if the build date is scheduled then WHAT IS IT please?

<hr width=100% size=1>

OK, 5.0Gxi DP it is, thanks

Thank you for your kind replies and comments /forums/images/icons/wink.gif It seems that the 'e-mail a friend' option on here has firmly gone for the 5.0Gxi DP, so that is what I will get. I must say the comments on top speed is sensible, it is very rare you would get the chance to use it, if those speeds were accurate, but anyway they are fast enough to know you would not be going that fast for too long.

Unfortunately I can't say any more, except I will be holding a launch party somewhere down South, hopefuly on the weekend of the 14th May. You will all be welcome to have a play with her,...........while I take the boat out and 'test it' /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif. I am looking forward to a new start to boating. Just the second Yachtmaster exam tomorrow, better duck my nut and start revising my Meteorology /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Hi Pete,

Glad to hear your new boat, is at the building stage, and you can relax now you know what is happening.

When you talk about engine choice, I agree with you, it is a difficult choice!!

Now, you ask about my boat, It is 23'6 hull length, 25'LOA. It weighs 2ton, and as you know i chose the Merc, 5.0mpi 260php with the Bravo III.
Speed wise, i cannot be accurate, as i have never used a GPS in it. But i maintain my top speed is about 55mph, with our gear, and full fuel. Fuel is anywhere between 8-12GPH, which i feel is pretty good,depending on use.
I absolutely love my boat, it takes off quick, and with the BIII is jumps on the plane in no time and handles superbly.
But if i were ever to buy another Rinker 232, i would probably put the 350 Magnum in it/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif, Why? Well your new boat and my boat are both 'Sportsboats', Which to me means fun!!! There is only usually me and the Misses on our boat, and i love speed and the thrill of the throwing a boat around.So i do tend to drive quite fast,(there is a speed limit on Loch Lomond of 55mph, and i was once stopped and told to slow down,Oops), and i like the power and responce to be there, when ever i need it, And i..... No, We, (as Swmbo agrees)think the 350 Magnum, with the Corsa Quick & Quiet Straight through exhaust, Would be fantastic. But obviously the down side of all this is the Fuel consuption, but i expect my fuel bill to be very heavy each year, and i budget for it, And i would expect it to be higher should i buy a 350 mag.

But all that probably doesn't apply to you, I sail inland, so the waters i sail in are probably flater than you would get on the south coast, I would think there won't be many days down there, you could enjoy Full Throttle, flat out.
So the 350, would not be suitable,

I think as you and everybody else has said, The 5.0Gxi Dp, giving you 270php, would better suit you, Plenty of power there to still enjoy yourself, But remember the more Kit(rubbish) you put on board, the slower it will make the boat, So think long and Hard about what you Need and what you Want?? There is a big difference./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Sorry for the delayed reply, and for waffling on.

I know you will enjoy it, whatever it is.

Cheers for now.

Alistair.

Ok Kevin,

If you are opening a book on it.

I said last week it was a Larson, and i'll probably stick with that.
But for some reason the Monterey now springs to mind!!!!

Only H1 knows if we are right!!

My money is on another Glastron... /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Although the engine line up does match a Larson!
