Boat build slot and delivery date set, but just need to convince myself on an engine. Do I get a 350 Mag BIII (300hp), a Volvo 5.7Gxi DP (320hp) or a Volvo 5.0Gxi DP (270hp) doesn't matter about the type of boat as all three would be fine on it, just interested if anyone can see the benefits of going bigger than a 5.0Gxi DP which is my favoured option. I have been told that I would only get a few mph more on the bigger two, for a quite a bit more fuel. So is 62mph (54knts) enough, or is there a need for 69mph (60knts)? (top speed taken from MBM figures, I have not tested the boat myself, but they must be there, or thereabouts). So what benefits apart from top end speed and a more expensive day out would I get? Weight wise the 350 Mag seems to be lighter than the 5.0Gxi!

Alistair, what top speed do you get, and would you want a bigger engine? My new boat will be 2 tonne, 22ft with a Duo-Delta Conic hull, may be a bit lighter and shorter than yours.

Is the Mystery boat not going to be flying at 60kt's?
By the way what is the mystery boat?

Look at the torque figures of the engines. Basically more torque better acceleration etc etc. So if lots of watersports are on the cards then go for one that would pull a fat git out on a deepwater mono start. If its more for cruising economy then go for the 5 litre job. Plus at your proposed 60knts or whatever it is, every little ripple becomes a potential take off ramp. So on the average outing your not going to have the conditions to blatt about at max speed.

I had upgraded the 5.0Gxi to a DP to get better acceleration and bite on cornering, I thought that would be enough, but I don't want to regret not going bigger later. As you say over a certain speed things get a bit hairy, remember our first day out at sea /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif We may even be able to catch Col in this one /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I must say SWMBO screems if I go over 20knts so it would only be for 'boys days out' and my wallet that I would let it rip, conditions permitting of course. I think if as you say even a bad ripple could be a take off ramp, I may need a PPL /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif No, I understand about top speed, it was other benefits, like would I use less revs to toodle along and save money?

Actually, for £11,000 more I could have gone for the KAD32, with a top speed of 26knts, I thought for 1000th of a second and then decided no, I still have some fun and life in me yet, not time for the slippers, pipe, beard and hot chocolate yet /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif I could always go ahead and book the steak dinners at the pub in Yarmouth as I will be faster than Duncan now /forums/images/icons/wink.gif and wait for the rest of you, perhaps I should just eat mine and order breakfast for the rest of you instead /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Anyone want a race, 15th May, Hamble to Yarmouth, loser buys the meal /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

How about race, hamble to gibraltar and back, non stop? More my style!
Do you do everything flat out, pity, you will miss so much.

£11k more for a kad32 ??? You will buy a complete engine and leg with ss props for under £10k. That means should you go diesel you will be paying the retailer £1000 to keep your petrol engine on his shelf.

Don't I know it, we have been through it all before on here, a TOTAL rip off. I could not believe it when I was given the prices, especially in a couple of years when diesel will be more expensive than petrol anyway /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

have fun in life ? go fo the big diesel cruiser and eat the steak dinner on the way with several beautiful women that came along then go to a club and get slaughtered until 4 am and let duncan order breakfast. that is having fun the way we do it on the east coast....

Err... only enough fuel to make Yarmouth I think /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif As for going fast, I don't make a habit of it, I just wanted to test it out, or get to the pub before closing time /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Last time Duncan had to order the food for all of us as it was closing, he did a great job by the way, when we arrived it was all on the table ready /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I'm afraid I am not in that league, I have to make do with fish and chips in the Cuddy with SWMBO /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Perhaps if I played the lottery I may be able to one day, but I don't. I wouldn't mind giving it a go if anyone wants to do a boat swap for a day or so, just leave the food and women on board and I will do the same /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Personally, I would steer towards the VP options, but I'm biased.

Either Volvo 5.7Gxi DP (320hp) or Volvo 5.0Gxi DP (270hp)

Both are sexy engines: if it were me, I would probably stick at the 5.0Gxi 270 to try and keep the fuel consumption within reason.

Is swinging allowed on here??!!!

I think Tracey might wear the trousers as her name appear first, anyway each to there own and good luck Happy please let us know how it goes

I was thinking along the same lines as you, what seems strange though is that both the 5.0HGxi and 5.7Gxi are 472kg each, it is only the bigger 8.1Gxi with 420hp (now that would be sexy /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif) that weighs more, although not an option for my boat unfortunately. I do prefer the cone clutch, but am not too pleased with the Volvo after sales /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Just buy the Bl@@dy thing, all the engines will do what you want, i had a plain 5.0l in my 2655 did everything i could have wanted, pulled skiers and blasted about.

Once you get used to the speed it will not matter if it is 50knts or 60knts, save the money and get more equipment, I understand that your last boat was a bit empty and you really needed more extra!!!!!

LMFAO.

It must have been on it's trailer on a motorway!
