What do you use for a fuel dip stick?

My tank, (stainless) is visible through ther aft deck hatch. There is no fuel guage so as with all my prev' boats I've fitted a 'T' piece into the fuel line at the base of the tank. One side of the 'T' connects to the engine, the other is clear fuel pipe that is fixed vertically to the tank. this pipe is blanked off at the end with a small breather hole. As the pipe is on the centre line and the end is well above the tank there are no leakage problems even when conditions are boisterous, I have a simple 'at a glance' fuel guage. Cost? about a quid. Hope this helps, Mike.

We have a wooden 'tape measure' that folds up in sections.

Did you mean a folding rule ?

It would certainly work, but much dearer than a piece of dowel. (There are some people here, however, who believe that paying more for something makes it better.)

Ah yes, thankyou, good spot, as you probably realised I couldn't remember what they are called. I'm really glad to see they are still on sale, ours has lasted over 12 years but I guess the day may come...

Nothing.

Now that we're on a swinging mooring, and as I really CBA going to a fuel pontoon, I just fill up a 5L jerry can with white diesel when I fill the (diesel) car and dump it in the boat tank after each sailing trip.

This season, I've emptied the whole jerry can fewer times than I've filled the boat tank.

Hmm, any other raggies use more booze than diesel? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I hadnt a clue what to use to measure the fuel level when i got my boat, but i thought i needed a stick of somesorts. Under a cushion i found a stick that i thought would suffice. Then i realised it had random pem markings on it. I love telling folk on the boat that it is my fuel gauge:) Yes i am sad!!!

The trouble is that i have no idea how much fuel the tank holds. And whether the marks are accurate. As long as the pole is covered in diesel then it has fuel.
