What do you think about rope cutters

Wondering if it's worth having a rope cutter fitted whilst boat is out ?
Looked at a ropestripper but they are not exactly cheap, any views ? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Wouldn't be without it. We have had the Ambassador Stripper on last and present boat and great bit of kit. Easy to fit as well.
 
Reassuring, perhaps even essential, safety kit.
Ambassador Stripper is the one that really works.
 
Cut 6ft off my trailing genoa sheet, and I didnt hear it go.

we didnt feel a thing, just noticed a snaking trail in the water, caught round the rudder. 30 miles offshore.


So buy one.....

How much did the lift out cost - how much is the stripper?

How much is peace of mind.
 
"Dont bother with the cheap, spinny disk ones - utter waste of time in my opinion."

That's not what Sailing Today concluded so I've settled on a Proprotector at a third of the price. Of course I have to look out for floating nets and poly sheets with carving knife lashed to a broom handle close to hand.
 
I'll second that.I know for a fact my Stripper works.The disk cutters only work if the rope gets twisted around the prop or shaft and is pushed on to the cutting edge.It doesn't always happen that way.
 
I suspect a stripper of some sort is an essential bit of gear in your part of the world, we don't seem to have too many problems in that area over here.

I did manage to get my anchor rope around my keel once but have never managed to get the prop.

Seems from the comments above not cutters are the same when it comes to doing a good job, so some good advice for you there.

Compare and decide, I will just add that the only practical comparison did not include the quicKutter because it had not been invented in 1999.
 
My boats got a composite P bracket, anyone out there fitted an anbassador stripper to one of these?

Problem is that the standing part pf the cuter is held onto the P bracket with screws into tapped holes. I'm not sure a composite bracket will be strong enough.
 
We fit our quicKutters to the composite stern tubes of the new RNLI boats.

With grp or composite tubes our fitting advice is to have stainless straps made up with tabs on the end, weld the cutter body to the straps and then tighten them around the tube.

With any fitting if you supply drawings or photos we will give advice on fitting options. There is often a way to fit the cutter but the fabrication is likely to cost more than the cutter
 
Initially I went for a cheapo disc type one but it soon seemed to get blunt and I doubted whether it was fit for purpose. I changed it for an Ambassador stripper which has cut cleanly through a trailing rope without my noticing. It also is self sharpening as I found out when cleaning it on the annual lift out. As my P bracket is composite, Ambassador made me a SS bracket which clamps around the P bracket. So far, I've had 10 years out of it with no trouble.
 
I have an Ambassador Rope Stripper. Motor sailing off Falmouth last year the engine suddenly lost revs. Selected neutral and wondered what the problem was. Tried forward and reverse a few times and revs returned. Looked over the stern to see a great wodge of plastic sheeting, rope and netting floating away. The rope cutter had done its job and we carried on.
So my view is it was well worth having!

I saw one of the Ambassador strippers being fitted on a friends boat, bloody good sharp looking things, best I have seen, pricey but that is what you pay for.
I will definately have one fitted next winter when the boat comes out of the water.
