I'm hoping someone can make sense of this for me - moulded into the underside of the cockpit moulding of my Galion. The Reg Ton is pretty straight forward but what of the 'Off No'.

Built around 1970 does it not pre-date the SSR? Can this be a lloyds register of Small Vessels Number? The Hull number is 35; that is moulded onto the inside of the transom.

Thanks and Regards

She was obviously on the Full Register originally.
Therefore has an Official Number, and a Registered Tonnage. These have to be attached indelibly to the hull. On a wooden yacht would be carved into a main beam somewhere. On GRP engraved or stamped into a brass plate which is let into the main bulkhead. The number is allocated by the Register of British Shipping.

that's it

LeighB has it.

The registered tonnage will include what your boat could carry in cargo if the saloon was a hold. Official Number is part one registry thing

Thanks all... much as I suspected, but search as I might there appears to be no online resource that allows a search of the Register.

Maybe I should write to Lloyds?

Thanks again

You could try your local reference library. I know Bristol used to have old ones and I think the librabry in Ipswich did (they certainly had the Lloyds wreck register!), but I'm not sure whether that was only shipping. I was looking for details of a coalier.

If you want to find out more information, speak to someone at the MCA who deals withPart 1 registered Pleasure Vessels - ring them on 02920 448866.
They were extremely helpful when we bought Mermaid.

I think the only way is going through page by page, which would take hours. The other way is to look at the manufacturer/designer (the Registers have lists of boats at the back of boats listed by buillders/designers) and look up each boat which could be that design & compare the Off. Number. However there isn't any listings for Gallion Yachts, Ian Hannay, and only under Deacon Boats could I find one boat with a much earlier sail number. Did anybody else build them?

I'm pretty sure with a build number of 35 she will be a Deacon boat, but I did hear that Deacons lost a lot of early records in a fire. I think I might call in there next time I'm on the South Coast, I think their Yard is behind the Old Alladin's Cave Chandlery (now Force 4?) by Burseldon Bridge on the Hamble.

Look Guys thanks for all your efforts but don't spend too much time on this. On the point of 'Yacht Club Libraries' I think I've seen a 1970 Lloyds register in the North Fambridge Club House, I'll give that a try next time I'm in there.

Thanks again

Just to let you know ... I contacted the MCA by Email and received a prompt and very helpful reply, to cut along story short I parted with cash and they sent me a copy (well 3 copies) of 'The historical Transcript of Registry'

She was registered as 'Sumano' in August 1968 and built in the Designers yard (Hannay Marine Ltd) in Brockenhurst, Hampshire. The Owner held 64/64 shares and hailed from Thorpe Bay, Essex.

This explains why she is in Essex, but as the Part 1 registration expired in 2002 and only has this one entry (no registered ownership changes), what happened to her subsequently will probably never be known.

Thanks for all your help with this and I second WingDiver's comments the MCA Registration Department were very helpful
