Our ropes are all permanently attached at all four corners so are always at the ready. When underway the loose end is tied securely to the rails.
Fenders we take off when underway (even on the river, although on the river we will ofetn just lift them on the walkways on the sea they come off altogether and store in the cockpit) but they are on clips so are easily adjusted and repositioned. The fenders are put back on as we enter a port/harbour and then adjusted to suit the mooring we are given as we approach it.
We have our home berth fendered up so no need to bother putting them back on for that.
A few times now we have gone to the assitance of a boat crew struggling to moor up and have asked them to throw us a rope only for them to do so not attached to the boat. What do they expect you to do with it?
