What do liveaboard do when not sailing

Sadly on the otherwise pristine coasts of Scotland a massive proportion of the plastic debris is from fishermen. And even the dockside at Stornoway and Mallaig is covered in small bits of plastic rope, which is just going to blow into the harbour.
There is some larger bits of plastic also - I got snared in a 60+ metre length of black pipe, completely invisible just at surface level, which was just part of a fish farm which broke free in a gentle gale
 
Sadly there is a long tradition among seafarers generally of just deep sixing anything unwanted. Now much of that rubbish is made of plastic and it never goes away. We are going to need to devote a lot of resources to clearing it all up
 
Yes I agree,at one time it seemed endless.Whilst fishing off Fastnet we trawled up a net of fish which all had to be discarded as with the fish we caught a paint locker of old paint tins ,bright blue fish?Another time steaming down Chanel light we caught a thick warp in the prop.By emptying the aft tanks and filling the fore peak the skipper could reach the prop and free it and salvage the plaited six inch warp.
 
It's great that it gets collected, but there must be municipal support too, to ensure recycling or at least safe disposal. I understand that there are multiple sites around the UK where rubbish was supposed to be securely dumped but which are now being uncovered by weather and moved about all over again...
 
We all need to do our bit too ,
This year we was lucky we got a bin liner around the prop without a problem , one friend caught a fishing line and it cost him €700 in haul out fees plus seals ,oil .

Last year it was us with a nylon bag on our sail drive , the year before a rope .
To catch a bag or rope in open sea just make you think out much rubbish there real is out there .

This year we notice little white bits sailing long the coast , more and more appealed all the sudden we was sailing in a sea of white ,
the bits where parts of polystyrene fishing boxes , the sea was covered and we must had sailed a good mile before we sailed out of the mess .
That's a lot of boxes .
 
What do I do when not sailing?
Laminating... printing... and otherwise trying to run a miniature school. The joys of living with a five year old...
 
I've posted before about our routine of collecting plastic etc on a couple of the secluded beaches where we anchor and the plague of polystyrene fish boxes we encounter and collect during the fishing season here. It's great to see that more Turkish boaters are becoming environmentally aware in the last few years. Over the last few weeks the local coast guard dive teams have been identifying and recovering discarded fishing nets from the sea floor in Kuşadası Bay. They press-ganged some of the trawlers to help lift some of the nets and they got a big tug from the cruise liner harbour to tow one particularly big net close to a liner jetty where a huge crane was used to lift it out of the water. This was a joint effort with the town municipality who took all the recovered nets away for recycling.

i see the Dutch couple ( left ) there from the cat ( youtube ) Exodus ,, they have a good channel , seems a nice guy .
and is it ( not very clear ) the other dutch guy from Project Manaia

Wim and his wife are real nice couple ,
Yes they so have a youtube channel , althought I not watch it .
Manuel and his and his partner are Austria

both channels are worth watching , one the entertainment ( for those of us with aging catamarans ) and the other for educational purposes .
