What do I need the shore power inlet for if I don't have any appliance on boat

I have a river mooring. i.e. no electricity. I have removed all generators too. Noisy troublesome items. I am almost completely self suffiecient on battery and solar power to keep them topped up but I do have an shore power outlet and very handy it is to have too. Simple things like having a hot water shower without first having to run the engines is one benefit when in port. But when the boat is on the hard it really comes into it's own. Dont think of your boat in the same terms as your car. Oranges vs Apples.

My flybridge helm has no fixed vhf although there is a vhf at the lower helm. I use the handheld often but the calls are over a short range - usually less than 1km.
A handheld VHF has limited range compared to a fixed radio . This is due to the relatively low height of the antenna.

Wow! I don't know the handheld marine VHF can only reaches less than 1 Km, that is almost useless.

I am also a amateur radio player and my 5w handheld radio can reach 5Km ~ 8Km (on sea level), my longest distance was 21Km
(handheld to handheld, high position to sea level position)

Thank you very much for this important information.

He meant his use is less than 1km, handhelds at 5w have a range of 3 to 5 miles depending on the configuration, but you should get at least 2 mile range.
