Just been reading about rules in france on day shapes- sorry i am being a bit lazy here but can someone tell me what shape to use and how to mount it- i havent seen one in action. i have a 27ft mobo.

Thanks

As Charlie Alpha said.

Anchor is 1 ball up

Not under command, 2 balls (bit of a balls up)

Aground, 3 ball (or complete balls up :D )

Thats how I remember it anyway :)

Having asked the same question a while ago, I got one of those balls, which comes as 2 circular sheets that you slot together. When at anchor, I secure it to the end of the extended boathook with a bungy cord, and push the pole of the hook down into the anchor locker of my 7m Mobo.

Seems to work, but I am in the monority when I use it!

indeed

still, it could be worse - you could be sitting there with a large yacht heading your way, inverted triangle on the forestay and a muppet screaming 'starboard'

I only mention it as this happened to me the last time I 'flew the ball'.

I find it very hard to believe that anyone who knew enough about sailing to yell "starboard" would yell it at another boat that wasn't sailing, whilst motoring. Sure you haven't made that up?

You'd be amazed. Does not surprise me at all. Racing yachities are a law unto themselves. Evidence? The recent incident off Cowes - anyone found some nice bits of pink spinnaker floating about?

A few years ago I ran a course for a guy who proudly said he was a racing yachtsmen and knew a it all. When I asked him to identify the West Bramble cardinal he said - oh I don't know, I have a navigator chappie who does all that! And that is a true story. We went back to basics!

no sir I did not

the incident occurred in Poole Bay and my interpretation was that the yacht simply yelled something to justify his embarrassment (it may even have been an attempt at humor but, to me, it wasn't a humorous situation). I suspect a classic auto-pilot situation as I was anchored directly on a line between the exit of the North channel and Poole entrance.

I had got as far as putting the reels in free spool and starting the engine, with a view to reverse and letting out more rode when the shout came, closely followed by a change of course. I never saw anyone on the yacht look backwards and, being a reasonable sort of chap, I declined to report the vessel via CHIRPs.
