What Compass

Folks, we need to buy a compass for our Hurley 22, we had intended in buying a Plastimo Mini Compass, bulk head type, however our cockpit/cabin bulkhead slopes at too much an angle, to be able to mount one, so we are thinking about setting one in the hatch cover.Has anyone solved the same problem?

thanks

I faced the same dilemma when I bought my first boat many years ago (also a Hurley 22) and eventually fitted a Suunto Commander handbearing compass which had an inclined bracket and backlighting. This also served as a spare handbearing compass. There are other makes on the market now that have suitable mounting brackets and most work at an angle (even upside down).

Since then, I have realised that you can get steering compasses for inclined bulkheads but you have to ask! The Plastimo range for example has versions suitable for inclined bulkheads between 10 degrees and 25 degrees which I think should easily cover the Hurley bulkhead but not in the Mini-Contest range (typical isn't it?).

I hope this is of help.
