What causes a Jabsco cooling water to leak like this?

Thank you for those. I'm having trouble identifying the pump - I can't see a part number printed anywhere on it. It's on a Thornycroft 230. Here's a picture. Any help identifying it is a gratefully received:

Looks old, you may have some difficulty in identifying exactly what it is. Fortunately though, the bearings and seals will be bog-standard available from Simply Bearings or a local automotive factor. once you know the sizes. I assume you know the impeller details, which should help.
 
We used ASAP for the seals and a bearing supplier for the bearings £20 all told? It's not worth skimping on the bearings, from memory you need a very simple puller to get them off.
 
If you are going to replace the bearings and seals I would recommend getting sealed bearings (suffix 2RS) and make sure the seals have stainless steel springs.

I have the same base engine the Leyland 4.98 but my jabsco pump does not look the same as yours. I do have a complete list of all jabsco pump application but is on the boat and I won't be there until mid next week then I will have a look

As Vyv has stated simply bearings is the way ahead here, remove the pump, strip id your seals and bearings rebuild. Wouldn't have thought it will cost more than £ 40 parts assuming the shaft is good.

Sometimes with a worn seal, there is also wear on the shaft, caused by the seal. Some models have a spacer washer which positions the seal. This washer can either be in front of, or behind the seal. Changing its position, when renewing the seal, ensures that the seal is bearing on an undamaged part of the shaft.
 
Thanks Vyc and others. I emailed Cleghorn and they seem pretty certain that it's a 9700-04 or 01, the last two numbers just denote the water volume. A new 9700 is £450! The problem is that the parts will be £40 but the labour will be how much? And if the shaft is badly worn it's £120 from Cleghorn. I'd really like to just send it off somewhere to be done, we all have our skills and skill gaps and my gap is mechanical engineering. I promised my self no more expenditure on this engine - I told it it had £250 and that was it. Damn thing keeps slowly costing money, never enough in one go to bite the bullet on a replacement but just enough to really make me fed up.
 
If you are lucky the only thing it needs is a new seal. Where are you? I can look at it for you if not too problematical. PM if you prefer.

If you get it stripped, might as well do both seals and the bearing. But, be aware the bearing is a double row ball race and doesn't show up in many catalogues.
I had exactly the same problem, water leak after winter lay up. Found the seals locally (pricey!) but bearing not sold by Perkins (in the this case) and the bearing was corroded despite being on the oïl side of the seal. Time was short to order a bearing from the only site that listed it, so I used a single row race and spun up a phospher bronze bearing to make up the difference. Did the trick, but ordered a new pump to send on to Spain as the owner likes belt and braces.
 
The raw water pump on my MD22 (also a Jabsco) had similarly knackered seals. I took it off the engine, dropped it off at Looe Marine Engineering in Plymouth and picked it up the next day. They've charged me £50 for an hours work, plus the service kit (seals, bearings, etc.). Shaft was inspected and found good.
