What can\'t you buy in Greece

While SWMBO is frantically stocking up for 6 months in Greek waters, I am frantically trying to keep the weight down (she sails like a dog when overloaded - boat, not SWMBO).
It would help if I had some idea of which supplies we will not be able to buy in Greek waters, so I can focus the buying efforts in the UK.
Perhaps a forlorn hope, but suggestions will still be very welcome.

On my heroic voyage to Spain ,after kissing the ground discoverd that its a bit like Hounslow really,different names ete but one thing to take is PROPERENGLISH TEA!

On the domestic, side PG Tips. Possible to buy 'English' tea but can be dodgy. Also Colman's mustard and Heinz Ketchup.

Rest no problem.

kettle ...you cant not buy gas kettles in greece so if i was you i would take two in case one gets broken ,

Heinz sause you can get, agree about the kettle.
Birds type custard powder, oxo cubes, bisto gravy, pearl barley, distilled vinegar.
Lemsips. In the winter months cans of soup are rare, they only seem to stock them for tourists.
You cannot buy zap everything type ant powder! the stuff you buy here seems to be made by pacifists

It all depends where you are and when. For instance our local supermarket sells great teabags in the summer but not in the winter. They also sell a number of other products for the ex-pat market although they often put them in very odd places!

I'm in the UK for a week just now and my shopping list includes gravy granules, marmite, pearl barley, pie tins, a new teapot, raffle tickets, knitting patterns, Cheddar cheese and black pudding if that's any help. I don't like British sausages but if you do like them I believe you can't get anything like that in Greece.

Its a fairly modern European country you know so most things are available in the bigger towns.

I also have to comment that if you are only going to be in Greece for six months at a time why not be adventurous and buy local stuff then enjoy the things you've missed when you go back to the UK? Greece has wonderful fresh produce, most of it organically produced and only available in season. They butcher meat in a very odd way, but its tasty enough.

What are black pudding and Hollands pies ??? Err why take fraybentos pies??????

Agree about distilled vinegar, colemans mustard, Bisto though is just a gravy thickning you can better use flour and a bit of a stock cube!

Should you indeed have to ask such a thing, then i am afraid you are among the underprivelleged. I can asure you that Fray bentos pies, holland pies and indeed the famous Bury black puddings have sustained many circumnavigators of the globe, indeed, Sir Frances Drake himself was said to partake in a portion of Bury black pudding afore his famous voyage!
We all have much to learn!

Te fresh produce available in Greece throughout the year is amazing, and is well worth taking advantage of, I wish you well with your voyage.

here are a few items off our UK shopping lists for Greece from the last few years:
-Ginger beer;
-Sauerkraut;
-PG Tips (yes, they're on our list too!)
-Colmans Mustard (ditto!);
-decent mansize 3-ply tissues
-Mcvitie's Jamaican Ginger cake (excellent for seasickness and as "trading goods"!);
-Curry cooking sauces;
-DECENT CHOCOLATE!!!!
-germolene ointment
And every year we swear we'll travel light next time, and every year we have excess luggage...!

You can buy Lipton's Tea in Greece but is absolute poo.
I agree choclate comments too.

I also take ginger nuts, GREEK raisons and bread mixes[ I can't read the instructions on the Greek ones!]. Grainy bread mixes make a great seasoning for any fish you catch.

Sorry Mike, you simply cannot beat a nice slice of jamaica ginger cake with a dollop of Total yoghurt and a smidge of greek honey, washed down with a proper Cuppa, whilst anchored off Nidri watching the tea-time muppeting of charter boats all heading for that one last space on the town quay!

Although Greek which means that I'm not qualified to have an opinion on tea, I agree that Lipton is poo, but find Twinings also sold here to be good enough. I would be interested in your opinion /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As far as food is concerned, if I were you, I would rather try local snack and seasoning during my stay in another place. Olives, feta, yoghurt, honey etc. apart from being far better for you health than industrial snack, may prove to be as tasty.

Usually food fits the place that it is produced in. For instance, while I like ouzo very much, I never liked it in Switzerland.

Notice: If you are going to buy any olive oil, be sure to buy "extra virgin" quality, all others being of inferior quality without being that cheaper. I buy my own from my bridge partner who is a producer, but, if I were to buy from a supermarket I'd choose chorio (or horio or horeeo - its written like XWPIO in small letters) from "MINEPBA". Unfortunately the brand is only written in Greek and I'm afraid that you cannot read "χωριό" unless you have downloaded the appropriate Greek character set /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Peter (Pedro) at Boaters World in Corfu has gas kettles for sale.

There isn't much you can't get in greece other than british bangers!
