This is plumbed my cockpit locker adjacent to the engine and fuel tank. Cosmetically it’s in appalling condition and I want to change it. The engine is in excellent condition and has a primary filter of its own so why do I even need this contraption? Is it a water separator?

if I need it and I presume I do, any suggestions for a simple replacement?EB684CA0-B716-45CA-BF47-D00F3C121079.jpeg

You will thank yourself for retaining it or replacing it one day it's the primary fuel filtration, Racor or CAV as said if you want to replace.
What's that orange rust coloured liquid in the corner, water? I would be thinking about sorting that out before changing the unit but as you didn't know what it was I would change the filters and buy a couple of spares.

Its a CAV water trap agglomerator and standard filter double unit. The filters ( Delphi 296) need changing and the water trap cleaning out. It will clean up quite easily, its a good assembly to have.
If you consider replacing it with a new similar Delphi one be aware that the threads on the pipe fittings may be different, the originals were UNF, new ones are metric and not interchangeable, depend how old the unit is.

The rusty can on the left is the filter ! & is long overdue for changing as it must be very close to corroding through & stopping your engine. No need to change the whole unit in the short term but service/get it serviced ASAP.

Thanks everyone, it seems as though it’s a combined fuel filer & water seperator?

Don’t worry, I won’t be trying to start the engine with this plumbed in, it’ll be changed for a new one which is why I posted to discover it’s Identity! and the brown oily mess someone noted is just that, a brown oily mess caused by a 10 year old tin of used engine oil corroding through and dumping it’s contents. I’m not responsible for any of that, I bought the boat as a project and it’s coming along nicely.

I tend to think that for it to perform at its opimum that it should also be fitted vertically so that the two filters and bowls are 'hanging' down from the fitting! Is that a feed for an Eberspaecher(sp?) or some such on the right hand side ?

Thanks, does this one look like it might be a straightforward replacement? cav delphi Filter Kit Double diesel Fuel Filter-water traps takes the cav296 | RD Diesels

Yes, There’s an Eberspacher of some type fitted which is supposed to heat the water too! I haven’t got around to investigating how it all works yet, but I think that feed does lead to the Eberspacher. For now though as well as painting the topsides, I’m concentrating on the critical parts of the refurb, things like an Eberspacher can wait until after the boats seaworthy & & afloat!
