I need a bilge keeled conventional rig with room for 5 bunks and decent head room (i am pretty tall) having sold my last boat. I feel a lifting keel is something more to go wrong. I fancy a little performance having been used to my junk rigger for the last few years. (most yachts prob faster!) There are a few options I can get for about 8k. A jaguar 25 or pegasus 800 seem viable, or something similar. Are there any other options I am missing?
All your experienced suggestions welcome.

We Love our jag 25, but you'll find headroom a bit pinched if you're tall. Berths a bit on the short side too.

Done a little knocking about on a chums Jag 25. I was impressed with sailing performance and also with room below - it's sort of semi-open-plan.
I've heard that the layup is a bit skimpy, dunno if that's true.

Seawolf 26 sounds like you would need a Mk2 or 3, more headroom than the Mk1 but more money. Vee berth bit short if you are 5`10" otherwise solid boats.

JAGUAR 27, A good Pegasus 800 (masthead or fractional or gunter rigs available), Mirage 28...some of the best performers of the type and range listed. The Sadlers are cracking boats (inc.the 25)
I had a Jag 27 for 14 years, am 6' 4", the large hatch opens most of the saloon, 1/4 berth over 7 foot long, saloon berths 6' 6" and 7 foot, forepeak small...layouts vary. Sails like a witch!
Pegasus sails well and innovative layouts below. Good ones seem few and far between, but worth hunting out...
Seawolf 26 will sail well.
Mirage 2700, good solid boat, don't confuse with Mirage 26/28
Find a good one, and all the designs will give good sailing, I'm just Jaguar biased!! Had my 27 for 14 years, only just sold.....

Sabre 27, fine for headroom, can pick up a good one for 8k and advantage of having encapsulated keels so no leaks like many centaurs.

Thanks for suggestions folks, am looking at a jag then a Sadler 25 on Friday on the south coast, some boats here I have not considered, so I will have a look on the net too.

I've bucket loads on info. on the Jaguars if any help...used to run the JOA

We really like our Jag25. Its a good solid boat. The headroom issue as already mentioned could be a problem however our floor was lowered slightly be a previous owner so that gives a little more space. Bunk length is good i think, the rear 1/4 even when an inboard is present is very long and wide (outboard ones have a double). I do also like the Mirage, and if i'd have had a bit more cash i would have looked for a 28.

I still think Jag has a modern(ish) look to it too.

Well, a deal has been done. I should have my Jaguar 25 by next week. Impressed by the accomodation, and the amount of boat in good condition you can get for not a lot of money. she has a furling main - bit strange, but seemed to work fine. 2 year old engine. just needs a clean and a buff up, days work, and off I go.

Anyone know of someone or somewhere, or suggestions as to me swopping my 30 ft swing mooring in Exmouth, for one in the Dart - short term for 6 weeks or so ? I fancy exploring there for a while. where should I try ?

What happened about the headroom issue in the Jag? are you just going to stoop, or is there 6ft or so?

Try Hole Farm Moorings, http://www.riverdartmoorings.co.uk/ there are a lot of empty moorings on the river at the moment so you might be able to sit on a late launcher . Dave Distin 01803 835213 also still has some moorings free on the Kingswear side if you dont mind drying out at low water.
