What are you looking for in a harbour?

<snip>

Any other harbour masters stand out on the East Coast? Let's give them some recognition.

All the staff at Shotley marina are very friendly and helpful.

The harbour master and assistant harbour master at Wells are both extremely friendly and helpful in every respect. The channel into Wells is very narrow, twisty and shallow, whichever of them is on duty, they are happy to come out to the fairway buoy and guide you in, if you call them up on channel 12.

Somewhat restricted by tides, Wells is otherwise a nice place to visit. Toilets, showers, diesel, water and electricity on the pontoons, pubs, restaurants, shops, etc. Not a lot of deep water berths for anyone who can't dry out, so best check before visiting for availability.

I like Brightlingsea as it is.

I don't like or want to stay in a marina but they can be convienient. I want;

1 shelter,
2 quiet,
3 not to far to row ashore,
4 mud free secure place for dinghy at all states of tide,
5 provisions shop
6 decent pub
7 interesting things ashore for a day out
8 chandlery
9 fuel and water available

Maybe all in that order. All in reasonable walking distance.

10 above all; CHEAP! (up to £10 depending on facilities as above)

Dont want much then :D

I'm sure Brightlingsea could be improved. My proposals would be:

Dredge the entrance regularly so that large AWBs can leave at LW.

Put fresh water and electricity on the pontoons.

Instal user-operated floating-bridge ferries from the pontoons for shore access.

Build a tower by the flats with a restaurant on top with panoramic views.

Wi-Fi on the pontoons (free of course)

Rubbish collection from the pontoons - like Fowey.

Newspapers and rolls delivered to the pontoons at breakfast (weekends only outside the season)

I'm easily pleased.

Interested in your comments.

Thanks to all who replied.

For those who hadn't guessed the reason I asked the question was because I was interviewed for the Brightlingsea Harbour Master job and had to give a short presentation as well.

Found out today I wasn't succesful :( which is a shame, think it would have been a nice role. Haven't heard who got the job though.

Hmm.
Bad News: No job
Good News: At least you will still be able to go sailing when you want.

Broad reaching from Antigua to Domenica last month [down the west coast not the East Coast unfortunately] at night our rudder became all but unusable* so we anchored off a places called Deshaies on Guadaloupe about 0100 hours local, to wait for morning and try and identify the problem. Naturally the three of us on board decided to sleep until morning. About 0800 we were awakened by a cheery French voice offering us croissants and a baguette. He apologised for the fact that he had not been able to take an order the previous evening as we had not been there when he was taking orders, but threw in a few extra croissants and a baguette in case we needed it having identified there was an extra boat in the anchorage from his shop ashore. 4 Euros we thought was a good deal for that sort of service. We didn't particularly want a newspaper but fresh coffee would have been nice.

*A fishing net had wedged itself between the keel and rudder just below the bottom pintle. Easily removed in daylight with a good knife.

Bad luck about the job. Clever idea to ask the users before your presentation.

Did you mention this to the panel? If you had, you might have swung it!

Not very helpful, I know but well done for trying anyway.
