what are these nav lights showing?

Must admit I wasn't up to speed with the lights for specific fishing activities - but that one's still not applicable (blaming the skipper, not you :) ) since the net clearly isn't caught on the bottom in the picture.

That might explain the unusual looking approach to hauling the net, don't they normally drag it in over the stern?

I confess to know naff all about trawling but they must snag a fair bit, it is after all not very dissimilar to anchoring. I would imagine switching the lights over would be the last thing you get around to doing.

These pictures look highly processed to me. It's quite possible that the photographer altered the colouration for "artistic reasons".

No.

See the hatch between the legs of the framework on the starboard side of the foredeck? That's where the fish go in.

When the net's hauled, the fish are in the green portion of the net, the cod-end (though in this case it looks a bit empty). The guy in the blue shirt and lifejacket standing almost amidships is about to pull the line to open the end of the net and drop the contents in (unless perhaps he's pulling it away again afterwards and that's why it looks empty?). The Hiab with the powerblock on the end is to help get the cod-end round to the hopper; some boats seem to hold it there directly whereas apparently this one has that little mast.

(All my knowledge of fishing comes from The Catch and Trawlermen, so I stand to be corrected on the details :) )

Its quite common for fishermen to switch on their NUC lights like that one when hauling nets coz they cannot manouver. Source.... a good friend who fished UK waters for 40 years.

As for fishermen not knowing IRPCS, well best any of you try and explain that to a pro fisherman whilst wearing yer WAFI trousers!! ;)
