What are the effects of listing

Hi all

I have a steel 12m motor cruiser which lists to starboard over a 3.85m beam by 40cm ....over her overall length she dips to her stem by a similar amount ......I realise I will need to trim her, I believe the previous owner moved a lot of the lead pigs.

However my question is how does trim effect speed and fuel consumption.

40cm is quite a list, are fuel and water tanks both on the same side? On my 10m steel boat I have 250 lit fuel 125 lit water at opposite sides, I never usually see more than 50mm list even if I have full fuel and very low water (batteries at same side as water)

However my question is how does trim effect speed and fuel consumption.
I think I would be more concerned with stability.

That is a 12 degree list ! It is huge

What did your surveyor say when you bought it ? Do you insurers know ? I would doubt they would cover it as it must be highly unstable.

Are you sure that the fuel and water are evenly in the tanks and that there is no hidden water in the hull?

The weight to cause that degree of list must be huge

Hi
I have just re read my post.....I have given the wrong measurement...I have no idea why.

The list over 3.85m is 12cm...same stern to stem.

Apologies

unless it's a typo and it's 40mm there's something seriously wrong there!

Exactly, I said I never see more than 50mm and that's probably a guestimate on the high side. Perhaps someone has removed 1 engine :nonchalance:

So that is a 4 degree list

I Am on the boat now and have just measured. I have 1.3 degree. No boat is truly level

I don’t know what the accepted / can’t notice list is 2 degrees??

Check tanks and bilges. If still out I would call the former owner. He either moved added or removed !

You can find the approx weigh to add by adding friends to one side until level. I suspect it is more weight than you would be willing to add

600lts port and starboard fuel mid ships ..black water 250lts port mid ships ...two by 250 fresh water aft...central Volvo tamd 41 200hp.
Fuel full....black empty ish....water full re fitted today..
My issue is what effect on fuel economy and handling I realise I am going to have to re-trim but I may not be able to for some weeks.

Ok, Mine is about 3.2M beam. At a guess (just looked) if I (80kg) get off pontoon onto side deck the port side "drops" around
half an inch, certainly less than one inch. Hope that gives you a guide.

Doubt your 12cm will affect fuel consumption or even speed as you will be at displacement anyway.

Xtra stuff stored on boat ie.tools/spares/ generator/ batteries etc etc. ?

Would next be investigating any accessable bilges/ nooks and crannies for water.
Steel has a reputation for condensation .
Older steel boats need a tad more care regards internal corrosion to catch any rust early before it gets serious.
Doubt list would effect fuel but boat might have tendency to veer towards the list on any long offshore reaches , suspect skipper may well be unconsciously correctiing this with helm.
Non tidal waters, not really likely to be a problem.

Agreed, steel boats can rust away internally, un noticed, whilst the external well painted looks in great condition.

Thanks everybody...yes I have checked the nooks and crannies for rust even took the water tanks out to get under neath....you have put my mind at rest now I just need to move some weight about....thanks again.

How did you?
I know that nowadays most mobile devices have an embedded inclinometer with decimal accuracy, but did you measure several points onboard, getting consistent results?

A friend had a similar issue. The sealed void in the bathing platform was leaking / retaining water due to corrosion, they way I understand it this is quite a common design with Dutch steel boats.

I have noticed a slight list since putting boat back in water post putting a watermaker where the crew cabin loo was on starboard rear side. Have assumed that that was what is causing it. Doesn’t seem to affect anything thus far performance wise but I know you also fitted a wm and was wondering if you noticed a difference or whether you put a counterweight in to even things up.

No counterweight.

They weigh I guess 40kg?

There is also a Williams on the back. The “heavy” end is on the same side which I doubt helps.

1 degree odd is not noticeable , and would be preferable to adding weight to correct it!
