What are fast trawlers all about?

eh? we are taking 200 hp in the difference, hardly sucking the oil wells dry?, and what happens when you rock up to Mr MDL with 7.1 beam, you better sit down before he tells you how much extra your cat is gonna cost to berth, a shed load more than a miserly extra 200 hp will cost to run.... nope not convinced..... a house brick like that cat is a costly machine to run, sorry!!

Surely a 55 ft trawler cat does not equate to a 55 Fleming in terms of space. To compare like for like we will have to come down a few feet and the engines will get smaller still. Say 45 ft trawler cat compared to 55 Fleming. Probnably nearer the mark in terms of mooring fee comparisons with MDL. How about the transcat with only 2x230 engines

Thing is it can stick around at 9 knots and still cruise a long way.

Thats why I,d give The Wifes arm and probably a (slightly cellulite leg) for one.

Yep, that looks about right I'd say............

Fashion.

That's what they're all about.
Actually, there are many other case of products, in pleasure boating market, whose ups and downs are mainly fashion-driven.
Cats are one of them, btw.

Those Deancat 'things' I saw in the website of the gentleman who's selling them are probably the ugliest looking boats I've ever seen! By 'exposing' such ugly mostrosities with blatant commercial posting (a naive approach by someone who needs some lessons in marketing!) will have done his cause more harm than good.

He appears to be working on the naive assumption that all publicity is good publicity, a bit like spammers who send out 30 million messages and if they get 10 sales they've done their job successfully

I guess we can see the spammers by the number of posts they make. I fully support the development of more efficient engines like IPS. Is it not time manufactures started looking at more efficient hulls to save fuel as well? The fast trawler is the most obscene example in my opinion. I would love to see Broom or Princess build something to make a radical shift in peoples perceptions towards hull design similiar to IPS. Heres a few more amongst a load of overseas vessels that we dont market. Also radical mono?? for you diehards.

oh dear, not the number of post issue again. Well, I think you'll find that less than 0.000001% are associated with my current role, or forcing that area of topic into forum conversation. On the other hand nearly every post of yours is associated with.......spam

Well I guess if no-one was interested we would have 0 views and 0 replies. If that was the case I would not bother to post and go away quietly. I have mentioned 1 product I am involved with which was relevent to the post and 6 others brands I am not involved with. Lets make it 7. I can go on and on with others if you wish -I am sure I can dig another 20 or so brands. I have declared my interests, cant see I have done anything wrong.

Yep that sounds like me. Keep setting up the bait and I will send some back for you. I enjoy the banter and people trying to change my views. Keep trying - you and others may just see the light and come around to my thinking.

Speaking of fuel inefficient boats, I see that all the big HSS fast cat ferries Stena own are being sold as they are too expensive to run with the current high fuel costs. They are, however, being replaced by more efficient monohull ferries...

Thank you for the links. The popularity and success of these boats in their home countries is only too apparent from the fact that they all use CAD images rather than photos of actual boats. They are also very keen on 'in build' photos, as most boat owners clearly buy on the basis of the state of the shed the boat might be built in...

Planing cats are formula 1 type boats and can burn huge amounts of fuel compared to displacement trawler type cats. Planing cats are less efficient than planing monos as there is very little planing surface. You could start a thread "what are planing cats all about" and I would have difficulty arguing against the monohull viewpoint.

Don't want to offend, but ecky thump chum if you are trying to influence people towards cats for crying out loud don't post links to those things (apart from maybe the game fishy things) they are never going to cut it with anyone with a sense of design or style......are you trying to show to some sudents or summit how not to market a product, if so you are doing a darn fine job of it.

Selling a new yacht of any discription is all about what does it makes the buyer feel like when he imagines himself standing at the helm, how others will percieve him and 'does my bum look big in this', unfortunately you have a major hurdle with the things you are posting here, they simply just don't cut it on that score. You are not selling buses or trucks or washing machines you are selling a dream, a lifestyle, something very aspirational so while you can witter on about efficiency etc most peeps don't give a fiddlers not when they are spending 100's of thousands on their dream, as long as they are not burning more fuel than anyone else effciency is a secondary issue. If you add efficiency as an added bonus by incorporating new technology into an already saleable product then you have an edge but trying to sell efficiency as a stand alone is about as appealing as a dead parrot. Not very PC for sure but you need to start living in the real world my friend.

Secondly, you need to up your game considerably if you want to make cats 'sexy', at the moment apart from offshore class one stuff you have a long and lonely path to wander. Posting on here with a pretense of starting a genuine debate is not doing you any favours at all.

Try glacier bay and tell me they are not a big builder. Fountaine Pajot are major French builders and I read an interview with their MD. He is expecting demand for their trawler cats to match their sailing boats in a short time. Sunsail/Moorings are expecting a huge increase and I believe have purchased a cat builder in S. Africa soley to build cats. I agree some of the links are small builders but not sure large trawlers are same mass market like Broom, Princess etc.
