What antifouling ??

For the last couple of years I have used Blakes tiger xtra. The boat was kept on a mooring for the summer and in a marina for the winter.

However, we are now full time in another marina. It is tidal with no locks but a sill and a fresh water stream runs down so when the tide is out the marina is mostly fresh water. I have been told that I will be better off with XM2000 which is also quite a bit cheaper than Blakes.

I have found that with blakes if I apply 2 coats I still need to dry out late August to scrape off some weed.

Suggestions for what antifouling to use will be greatly appreciated.

Had horrible experience with XM2000.

Much better with Seaguardian

I've mostly used XM on a swinging mooring and quite like it. I don't know if colour makes a difference but white seems to be preferable to red.

Tried International Uno once, never again.

Suppose it depends on location as much as anything. Try asking locally.

When buying antifoul, look at the ratio of 'active ingredients' printed on the can, price is not a good guide.

Jotun Seaguardian now discontinued. Now called Sea something or other! Still going to use the new product ,as I have found their products are usually good.

Best thing to do is get advice from locals in your area. Shogun works fo rme at the top of Chichester Harbour on a drying mooring. But, it may not be the best option in your area.

If the boat is in water which regularly changes from seawater to freshwater, you might not need any antifoul at all /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif When I bought Rogue in Pwhllelli, she had a skirt of weed around her waterline.... I took her to Glasson Dock, (freshwater), and within a couple of weeks the skirt had gone. When we lifted her a few weeks later, she just needed a pressure wash to get rid of the slime and all was well.

Then.... we went to Lagos on the Algarve, where the marina is situated at the end of a river, so we got a mix of freshwater and seawater for 9 months or so. When I dived in the Med. there was only a slime on the hull, and no growth. This lasted to Syracusa where I'm sure she will have grown a garden of grass and barnacles again!!! We'll see when she is lifted in the next couple of months.

I used 2 coats of Cruiser Uno in August 2006, and it was certainly fine until at least Syracusa in Sept 2007.

Ask your new neighbours how they get on.
