In your opinion(s), whats the "normal" expected life of a marine engine and drive chain. Now bearing in mind that all the sevice is followed to the "book" and is generally pampered.

Now all car manufacturers have to make sure that spare parts are stocked for at least 10 years after the end of production of any model. My boat, over there on the left, is a little over 10 years old, well a little and a bit more. I reckon that in general a marine engine probably leads a better life than the car enginge. No long periods of sitting in a traffic jam idleing away with no load on it. No nut case reps late for meetings driving the nuts off it and is generally better looked after than your average car.

Long story short, totaled the out drive gears at the weekend and I've been told by the makers and others, that the parts I need are no longer available. To top it all off, the "Makers" have said that no new drive will couple to the engine. So its a new engine and drive!! One way of selling more units I suppose./forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Its a Vvvv........Vvvvvv......vvvvvv, na cant say it, but its a red dread sitting in the engine bay!

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

just read your profile - volvo petrols. What can I say? Except, have a look on eBay for a new or second hand leg. Lot of engines parts on there. Or maybe try Lancing Marine for second hand parts.

Try Paul at Coastal rides in Kent, he can supply S/H & recon. I found him very fair.

Been there tried that and keyparts and all the other normal avenues, even volvo themselves! They just don't seem to stock anything apart from the service parts. Tried most of the "Speciallist" mail order companies too. Its either find a good secondhand lower gearcase or get my backside into gear and rebuild the early duo prop gearcase that I picked up for a song.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Maybe a good case for Mercruiser, the old Alpha one been going donkey's years, virtually unchanged. Mind you, had to tow an elderly looking Sea Ray into Poole on Sunday, Alpha One, engine turning input shaft, but prop not turning, even when in gear!.

What you say about cars, is a good point, Barry. My Mercruiser 3 1/2 years old, 360hrs on clock, but front oil seal leaking and starter solenoid dodgy. Nothing serious but ought to be doing better.

Barry,

I agree with you on short life, but would have to challenge your wisdom on "easier" life. Marine motors and equipment lead hellish lives that make car engines look positively under worked. You need only think of the environment they work in and the running loads.

All that said, its V dissapointing to find that 10 yrs+ you run out of bits for them, I had exactly the same with my old Merc 90, (12 yrs old) which I loved. Ended up buying a new Suzuki 100 (which I also love but it took some getting used to!).

Any way, you may have to cast your net further afield for the parts. If you cant get sorted in the South, try Bill Higham Marine in Manchester, he has what looks like a disused church crammed with all sorts of motors and drive units. His number is 0161 790 7678. An overnight parcel service is available. Good luck.

You have an engine package that has given over ten years of service yet can't bring yourself to say the name, how strange?

What model of volvo and what drive, there are tons of s/h parts around, you just need to get off your behind and take a look.

Mmmm, yeah over ten years old, but in reality the service its given on the whole has been somwhat sporadic (sp). Anyway, the engine itself I stripped and tested/examined 99.99% every component. The engines been fine ever since then apart from dodgy parts, see another thread. The drive how ever seemed fine, so left well alone. It turns out that the said pinion gear was a gremlin waiting to hatch anyway( i've got a reliable source, and a bloody good engineering chappie as a friend) So I'll follow all those suggestion from the good peeps of the forum and see what eric the engineer comes up with as well. He sure he's seen one of them before! They all look the same to me, just diffrernt sizes.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

MY TWIN DIESEL PERKINS ARE 27 YEARS OLD AND PURR LIKE A BABY,WELL MORE LIKE A HARLEY DAVITSON ACTUALY,BUT I WOULD NOT CHANGE THEM AS YOU SAY IF YOU LOOK AFTER THEM THEY SHOULD LAST.

HAPPY SAILING

If it's just shafts and cogs you want Barry. I've got folk round here that will make them quite easily. As long as it's proper engineering stuff and not bent tin!!

Re: I must be effing mad!

Its dark, its 12:15 ish am, and I'm in the garage putting skoda gearbox pinion gears into my outdrive. I have eric the engineer here extolling the virtues of case hardened bevel cut gears and I've got to be in Reading at 8 am today!!

Tell me I'm normal please....oi has that kettle boiled yet!
