After reading the item above about Boating brake lights I thought April the 1st had come early this year, but then realised it was being serious.
To slow a power driven vessel it is normal to "operate astern propulsion" and the Colregs lights signal for this is found in Rule 34 (b) (i)
Slowing a sailing vessel is normally achieved either by heaving to or lowering sails which becomes perfectly obvious in daylight, and by night it would hardly be necessary to signal it is "applying the brakes".
The introduction of such unapproved lights as those suggested in the article can only lead to confusion.
What do you think?
 
A nice bright red rear facing (brake)light would be a good idea on a MoBo,which activated when engines went astern.
As most raggies appear to be barely in directional control most of the time even when going forward,would perhaps be of little use on a sailing boat. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As a fully signed up, and experienced, member of both communities I recognise that remark as coming from a novice who needs few thousand more miles beneath the keel.

On the other hand, as a raggie of many years experience, I recognise my own carefully nurtured sailing style in that comment. I wouldn't want a mere MoBo'er to understand the intricacies of when I choose to jibe or tack. It's FAR TOO BORING to be predictable.

Did you hear the News Quiz on Radio 4 today? One of the contestants [who claimed to do some sailing] reckoned the plods would be breathalysing loads of raggies beating to windward because they were seen to be zigzagging around.
 
To say nothing of the fact that these lights would infringe the colregs, which prohibit the display of lights which might be confused with the lights required by the rules. So amber brake lights might make you look like a hovercraft and red ones might make it look as though you are going sideways!

Not only unnecessary, and probably illegal under the present colregs, but completely unworkable: the lights will be coming on every time you go over a wave.

Obviously developed by someone with a bright idea but no experience. Ah, PWCs: that says it all.....
