Just been out with the Pope for a wee sail and a dram.

Saw 6.8 knots coming back from Oban to Dunstaffnage, not bad for 19ft on the waterline . . .

A proper wee yacht, with a gentleman as a skipper.

(Luckily this will have quietly dateslipped off the bottom before he gets home to read this - don't want any head swelling . . .)

Sounds like a great sail. My compliments to HH and your good self.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but this voyage wasn't the inspiration for a recent posting of yours "in another place"?

I used to drink with George Hurley in the Royal Plymouth Corintihan YC all those years ago. He never tired of reminding me that he produced the first ever mass produced yacht - the Silhouette. The Silhouette Owners International Association still have an annual rally at RPCYC in August and owners of all Hurley boats are welcome, I believe. C'mon down!
Anybody seen a Hurley Tailwind about lately?

Hi
I have seen two Hurley Tailwinds in Florida recently. I believe that six of them went to the States, one is in Turkey and the original 'Tailwind' is not accounted for, unless you can help?
It would be great to talk to you about George Hurley as I am writing the History of Hurley Marine together with Tom Eaves of the SIOA. Have you seen a Tailwind? Did you know that the Hurley Sailwind 27 is back in production? As is the Hurley 22! The Hurley Owners Association is growing all the time and we are joining in with the Silhouettes this summer at the RPCYC. 1st and 2nd July.
We are also holding a rally in Marchwood. June 20th
Hope to see you.
I ahve owned my Hurley for 19 years. Before that I had a Hurley 20 and a Hurley Felicity. Used to work for Hurlwind.

We owned what the first owner said was the last 27 to be built by George before the Americans took over the yard. The chap owned her from new, and wanted a blue hull, but George kept saying that blue hulls bloomed, white were best. When the owner went down the factory to see the hull come out, it was white, with a blue band below the water line. All this we took with a large pinch of salt. But after 2 weeks removing 20 years antifouling, we ended up with a white hull with a blue band below the waterline.
We sold it to doctor in Falmouth as were building and had not used her for two years, but on the understanding that we had first refuse-all if he sold her. We later heard she was sold in Plymouth, be nice to hear if anyone see's a white Hurley 27 named MONIQUE.

Re: Hurley Tailwind 002

Tailwind 002 was in Mylor Cornwall in the late 80's / early 90's. Converted by Robin to race in the Whitbread Corithian class, raced as 002 and Cornwall. She had about 5 / 6 foot added to the stern to bring her up to length for class, and form watertight compartment, I seam to remember it was by George from what Robin said.
She was up for sale a few years back, but she was totally gutted for racing, one cabin in stern, navigation and bunk. forward of mast was batteries and engine for charging, plus sail storage.

There is a book about her exploutes in the race, she rolled three times, and picked up a compeditor.

Pardon? I do'nt insult people I do'nt know.

Just to ease your understanding of how things sometimes work here ..

I know both Nick (Webcraft) and the Pope (McHurley) personally and have quaffed quite a bit with both them .. the comment was tongue in cheek mickey taking and taken as such.

What does intrigue me is why you resurrected this thread after such a long time?

Heyho.

Anyway, the hurley owners assoc sounds really friendly and fun eh? Provided of course that you have a Hurley, and/or agree with the organisers that a Hurley (any Hurley) is the very bestest boat in the world ever, easily....

The thread that wouldn\'t die

Not sure why you resurrected this thread again NickV since you had already replied to Jimi's cheeky post during it's first resurrection and particularly if you had nothing better than this to say.

Jimi shouldn't be blamed for being an AWB owner (not a Bavaria) since he has a large, all-female crew to accommodate and is in fact a closet H22 admirer. After a recent 20 mile blast up the Sound of Jura in 20 knots he made a point of saying how impressed he'd been with the Hurley's performance - though he did ensure that no-one else was listening. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Maybe you should spend a bit longer lurking on here before bandying the rude words about since you're not doing the HOA any favours at the moment.
