Aha, a bit of clarity. If the ferry was approaching the Medina and thus close to the channel my guess is that our X boat was coming out from the moorings to the east and going across the mouth of the Medina as the ferry was coming in.

Yes, the ferry might have room to manouvre but it was probably on its track in, assuming that the X boat came out of Cowes he would have known that as well. Prob a bit of bloody mindedness on both sides here, I suspect.

Stll nobody died, with the possible exception of those here from raised blood pressure.
 
Yes, I would probably have tacked when within 1/4nm, just for a few minutes to ensure that my path wasn't across his bow.... doing so at that range wouldn't contravene the colregs, would be a 'clear change of course', would ensure that I didn't suffer from any wind strength/direction issues, reduce the impact of his wash upon me and wouldn't really cost me anything much in terms of progress to windward.... as well as not standing me into greater danger due to potential colreg induced actions by the ferry....

I don't disagree with you... IMHO, the ferry was in the wrong.... but the yacht's action was still stupid.... but each unto his own...
 
Thanks, Teetoo, that makes more sense if the ferry is entering the Cowes channel at this point. That was not apparent until your post.
Slowing a little would still be the sensible option. Alas it seems to be the last resort.
 
Depth wasn't the issue. Had the ferry altered course to go around the stern of the X boat it would've been faced with numerous mooring buoys and navigational marks immediately in it's path; none of which can be seen from the photograph's.

Red Jet would probably have been fine. I crossed over to the Island on it last summer and was amazed at how manoeuverable it was, and how niftily it threaded a course through the very busy (Saturday morning) Solent traffic...
 
Just came upon this post and have to say I somewhat sympathise with the ferry capn on Saturday afternoon, it was difficult enough trying to navigate through all the traffic outside Cowes.
Do the ferries run radar at all times with a CPA on vessels in this busy area or is it all done by Mk 1 eyeball?

It can be handy if you're racing too - as long as you're going away from them - you can surf down the wave!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I would think radar cpa would be fairly useless as few of the vessels travel in a straight line near the entrances.
The other thing to consider is the tide, which is quite complex at this point, easy to think you are well clear of the channel but get taken across.
 
Not arguing about where this happened, but me that doesn't look like Hampshire behind the ferry - if it were I'd expect to see Hillhead and a bit of the Downs, industrial stuff at Fawley, or the relatively low lying land behind Calshot. Looks a lot more like the IOW behind Osborne or behind Gurnard.

[/ QUOTE ] I just wish to add I'm with you on that one. SWMBO and I took the red jet over to Cowes on the last day of Cowes week one year, sitting up front and looking out of the windows. It was an edification, I don't know how they ever get to Cowes on a day like that.

From where I was standing (to the east of the action, heading west), the view to my right was definitely the North Island, with Cowes on my left. In front of me was a v small boat with a death wish and a larger red boat with a very loud horn!

Are we at 100 posts yet????

Looks more like the New Forest than Osborne Bay.
What was the wind direction?
 
I've not had encounters with them for some time - we seem to just miss each other around the harbour ... quite handy really /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
