Has anyone got any experience of using a Whale Supersub Smart 650 automatic bilge pump, as I'm considering fitting one to a small bilge area on my boat.

Many thanks, Allan

+ Another, fitted one below my engine as it is very low in height, works fine since buying 3 years ago

I bought one to remove sea water that comes up the table support where the keel lift rope comes up on my Feeling 720. This occurs when the boat settles in the mud as the tide goes out.

After successful initial trials, I returned to the boat about 7 days later to find a) the bilge pump whirring away slowly b) no water remaining c) a very flat battery d) a seriously hot battery charger.

I phoned Whale and the first thing he asked was "Is there any sediment or mud in the water?"

It appears that the sensor switch will not work if it gets the slightest coating of mud or sediment. No mention of this on any of Whale's publicity material or operating instructions when I bought my unit.

So beware.

I got over the problem by fitting an American switch that relies on electrical conductivity to control the pump. This has been 100% reliable after 2 seasons.
