Have emailed a couple of questions about this pump to Whale and am disappointed not to have received a reply.
First question was does the sensor work on proximity to the water or if it needs to be immersed what percentage of
the sensor needs to be underwater before the pump starts working?Second question was how long after the pump is
unable to collect water does it stop running. The pump is installed in a small flattish bilge below the engine.Any information
gratefully received.

The OP has NOT mentioned or indicated that he intends to pump oily water. I am sure your post is not intended as a rebuke, but might it not be perceived as such, rather than benevolent advice ?

We have 6 of these - they start to pump when the pump is in around 3 inches of water and then keep going after it is dry. I can't say how long after dry as the noise annoys me after a while so I use the manual override switch (turn it on and then off and that stops the pump that was on automatic mode)

I do recommend these over float switch pumps and they certainly suck - I had to bring a damaged and leaking boat with no electrics across the solent last year and took two fresh batteries and two pumps - it was a cat so two hulls - they cleared the full bilges in about 10 minutes and kept well ahead of the leaking water for a 5 hour sail

I have one and on the sensor 'blade' that sticks out the back there is a slightly roughened area on the top surface under which is the actual sensor. This needs the water on it to work but holding your finger on it will also trigger it. It is about an inch square. I think most of it has to be covered otherwise it would keep triggering by any dampness left on it once the water has subsided. Mine runs on for about 15 secs before switching off.

Thanks for the information guys.Whale have replied to my enquiry now and have said that the sensor "blade" needs to be almost completely covered before it starts pumping and that the pump will run for approximately 25 seconds after the water has been cleared.Great story about the leaking catamaran Trident.
