I am after a service kit for an old brass Mk 2 (1.5") manual pump. It is fitted to pump out the grey water from the galley sink. It draws ok but the top seal (around the pump rod) leaks a little.

I have searched for ages and contacted Whale themselves who say they no longer support these old pumps.

They sent me to:

W J Gilmore (www.boatpumps.info)
distributors of discontinued brass bilge pumps and service kits
Phone: 028 4275 8865
24 Springvale Road , Newtownards , County Down , BT222RS

I have sent several e-mails over recent months to no avail (searches on other forums etc say he never responds to emails or letters). The phone number no longer connects.

Anyone else have an old pump they managed to get parts for from another source or know what happened to Mr Gilmore?

If you phone Down Marine in Dundonald they may be able to tell you if Gilmors are still in business, or they may be able to help as their place is like Aladdins Cave.

Is the seal a standard O ring? If so you should be able to buy a replacement by size.

If not, can a replacement be home made from rubber or (if it's really old) leather?

Post a photo of the old one here?

Pete

Struggling to find a pic at the mo... this is a parts schematic of the model I have. The barrel, pump head and base is all brass, the screw-in cap and pump handle are old school plastic. The cup washer etc is a rubberised material (not leather). My pump is leaking a little through what I think is the gland 'U' packing which is secured under the cap with the circlip.

I have three of these Whale brass pumps on my boat and I did get some spare parts from Mr Gilmore a few years ago but he was very difficult to contact. One thing he didn't have was spare rod seals (what Whale call the gland u-packing) but I eventually got some from a very helpful firm:

email: sales@fpe-ltd.co.uk

The type I bought were part number SU062037-012-R and they cost £2.50 each in 2011.

But please note these were for a 1-1/4" diameter pump. The dimensions were:

Recess diameter 5/8"
Rod diameter 3/8"
Recess depth 1/8"

I'm not sure if these dimensions also apply to the 1-1/2" diameter pumps. You had better check.

Wow! I'll give them a try then. I think Mr Gilmore cannot be trading anymore, website dead, phone dead, no nothing.

Well Parsifal, I got hold of them today and they've asked me to sent the bits and they will try to match them. I think the 1.5" pump parts are slightly larger... Recess diameter 13/16"
Rod diameter 7/16".

Fingers crossed. Thanks for the tip. :encouragement:

I have a 2" Whale pump. My cup washer had shrunk with age, but I managed to get it going by fitting an O ring underneath it. Do let us know how you get on as the knowledge could be useful in the future.

Ok, an update. As I said, I contacted FPE and discussed my requirements. They wanted my old seals etc to try and match them. Where they couldn't match them from stock, they made them up on their machinery. The whole service kit as described at my post #5 (including cup washer and U gland rod seal).

They shipped them last night, they arrived today. They fit perfectly. They weren't sure about the actual size of the cup washer due to wear on the old one so they sent 2 alternative sizes just to be sure. £16 + p&p.

So anyone out there with old Whale pumps and have tried and failed to get parts through Mr Gilmore, try FPE instead. :encouragement:

(Thanks to Parsival for the tip off!)

Can confirm that Mr Gilmore is still contactable at the email and phone number give by Bunym0b.
He supplied a service kit and brass plunger rod yesterday for our 1 1/2 whale bulkhead pump by return post today.

This is exciting news... but how do I know which pump I have? It seems to be 1 3/8 " outside diameter across the central section...
Thanks,
Crisp
