Whale galley pump - plunger type

Bought a boat. Leaking f/w galley pump (Whale V Pump, manual). Just replaced this pump with a brand new Whale like-for-like because the old Whale one was leaking (water coming out at the top of the plunger). Now I find, the new one does the same (only fitted 5 days ago). This surely cannot be right.

Before I take it back to the chandler, I thought I'd ask if anyone else has had the same problem and what the resolution was, if any.

Yep the old one leaked for just about as long as I remember.

When it ceased to function properly I replaced it with a new MK 6 type, which in theory can be dismantled and overhauled when necessary, unlike the old one.

I dont think it was long before the new one started leaking too.

The fact that it leaks does not matter to me as the only place the water can go is into the sink.

Maybe the Flipper pump would be a better choice if leaking water is a problem
 
My experience the same as VicS'. I have tried repair kits and replacement pumps. Unfortunately the top seal never seems to work. I had a little success when I filled the seal with silicone sealant but it didn't last long.

Also my experience. Bought the pump new from the chandlers and found that it leaked at the top seal. Returned to Whale on advice of chandler. Whale send new replacement pump which still leaks despite all efforts to solve the problem. Now I learn this pump would appear to be not fit for purpose. A strange state of affairs.

It rather depends upon how you define "fit for purpose" My original one leaked almost from the outset. I eventually replaced it when it stopped pumping properly after more than 30 years. It would be difficult to argue that a pump I used for 30 years was "not fit for purpose".
 
I think these pumps always leak in the end, ours always did and the best solution in my opinion is to scarap it and fit a whale galley foot pump with a spigot at the sink (providing space under the sink permits). The difference in terms of usefulness is unbelievable,hands free and no leaks.
 
Well, ours worked just fine until I cracked the spout housing. (It did have a new top seal a few years ago.) The replacement is working fine so far, and I've managed to plug the crack on the old one with Milliput. So that's a spare, then. We once had a flipper: it was a real pain, because it was so slow to prime.
 
These pumps can be simply fixed for next to nothing simply fit an "O" ring beneath the original seal and it will no longer leak.
 
Considering there are so many about you would think they would have fixed then issue especially if they are up to Mk6!

My brand new one leaked from the outset. Whale should be embarrased about putting their name to such poor kit.
