Whale 2\" brass bilge pump

Does anyone know any alternative suppliers of seals for the old Whale pumps? I have been trying Boatpumps http://www.boatpumps.info/ in Northern Ireland but can't seem to raise anyone there. The pump has pretty much given up so we have a bilge full of water sloshing about - in a flat bottomed boat. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I take it it is the Service Kit 2300 you are after. Google is not much help. Might be better ringing Whale direct. Sorry, not much help.

I asked Whale at the boat show. My pump has not been made for 20 years they said.

I have bought parts for old Whale pumps from Mr Gilmore of Boatpumps Ltd, but I suspect he is running a one-man band as he is difficult to contact and slow to despatch orders. He's a nice bloke but not very businesslike. All I can suggest is keep trying. He doesn't respond to emails or letters but you can sometimes catch him by phone.

As he is the only source of spares for the the old pumps there isn't much we can do about it. It is a problem for those of us with classic boats, who want to keep the original equipment. Seems a great shame to have to scrap a well-made pump with years of life left in it for want of a few seals. I once put this point to Munster-Sims Ltd but they were not interested; although quite happy to sell you a modern pump!

Is this brass pump a simple plunger style, about 18" long, with a mounting bracket at the foot and an outlet to one side of the top of the pump? I had one like this which I fitted as the cockpit bilge pump. I had to modify the disc on the end of the plunger rod, so that the seal was actually a large O-ring. This was set in a groove which was nearly twice as wide as the ring, but the correct depth. There were holes drilled down into the top of the disc which intersected with the ring groove, but did not go all the way through the disc. In operation, the O-ring would move up and down with the plunger. On the downstroke the ring would be up against the upper edge of its groove which was pierced by the shallow holes, and water could pass it. On the upstroke, it would rest against the lower complete side of the groove, causing a seal against water flow. It works very well, and the only wearing part is an easily-replaced O-ring. This is one of those occasions when a picture is worth a thousand words, but I don't have a picture to hand.

This is the offending item Whale2"
The cup packing 621/08 is what does the lifting. It is held in place by the valve seat which screws into the valve cage. It seems to have lost interest and will only pump if primed first.

I guess the pump is pretty old and I have a couple of diaphragm pumps knocking about, but it seems a shame to give up on it just yet as it looks the part.

I think I will have to keep trying Boatpumps. Could be he is on hols or something.

I got Mr Gilmore after a couple more tries and the service kit is on the way. I just needed to be a bit more patient - as ever.
 
HelpBrass Pump wanted

I'm looking for one of those pumps (2" Whale) to complete a project ( a WW2 canoe). Does anyone have one lurking at the back of a shed they want rid of? Let me know.
