I'll find a way to make this boaty in a minute, but I'm posting from my new Asus eee PC. Which is tiny and cute. And is intended for web access and stuff aboard. If you haven't seen one, they're here. Cheap as chips and ideal for the boat as there's no disk drive. It's fab.
Great bits of kit, and making waves in the market which will give Asus some very good publicity. I've been a user of Asus gear for quite a while, but not very well known in the UK. They don't bother advertising much, prefering to grow by word of mouth.
Well, someone has already hacked one to install a GPS internally, and it has an SD slot and can run Windows XP. Got to be worth a try, but it's only a 7" screen...
It's all good kit - I have used Asus motherboards in the past 3 desktops, and they'd be on my shortlist for notebooks.
But, they're not really competing in the same market as HP/Dell just yet, as they don't have the complete offerings that larger companies would want. But there's no reason technically why they couldn't muscle in and take more market share, given the right approach.
Motherboards, Schmotherboards! Ach, who cares? It's the size of an A5 notepad, it weighs two pounds and it worked straight out of the box. It connected to the home network, installed the network printer, and now it's picked up MDL WiFi. This little puppy rocks. We now have a dedicated* boat 'puter.
As an aside, it should do reasonably well on board, as apart from the fan, it has no moving parts (no hard drive, see).
* Dedicated. Subject to wrestling it away from SWMBO and the kids. I can see me buying a flock of these things.
??? I'm not saying that your diskless notebook won't take over the world. Just explaining why I think Asus doesn't have more of a presence overall. They have niche products, but it's not what big companies want.
No, I know. But how much of their stuff is OEM'd I wonder? Do the big PC builders really do their own motherboard design and build? And anyway, the big corporate buyers don't give a toss what's inside - it's how well it can be supported that counts.
And how waterproof it is and if it has an NMEA interface, just to keep this boaty.
Apparently they're releasing a fanless version in April. Have heard nothing but good things about these machines, becoming very popular in Ireland too.
Hmmm. My little 2g is does the biz. I can access the online Eberspacher manuals, use BT directory enquiries to try to track down spares, and the daughter can sit there all day on MSN...
