wet exhaust/muffler Volvo MD

I took ours off today.

The stainless steel half dome at one end has a 40mm pipe welded on to accept the water and exhaust from the engine. The water/exhaust enters at the top. The half dome at the exit end has another 40mm pipe welded on at around 70 degrees to the horizontal, it again exits at the top. This pipe passes internally almost to the base of the unit. The half dome, at the exit end, is almost closed, open at the bottom, by a plate welded on, a baffle. The rubber cylinder is 'empty'. A very simple device. There is nothing wrong with being simple - it obviously works. It seems maybe the lifespan of our unit might come in below average - but 16 years is not much to complain of - but its so simple I, still, wonder why not plastic end fittings.

I assume exhaust pressure forces the water out of the muffler over the loop to exit the hull fitting.

The half dome at the input end has corroded at the bottom allowing retained seawater to leak, now very quickly. Maybe corrosion is swifter in warmer Australian water. The rubber cylinder looks to have years more life.

Thanks for all the advice - it was a whole new spectrum of knowledge that I had never had to think about previously. If I had known what to ask I am sure Mr Google would have helped - but when you start with minimal background YBW beats Mr Google hands down!

I had a similar exhaust water trap on my Volvo 2030. The stainless steel ends had rotted through but I bodged them up with epoxy until I could get a replacement. The Volvo one is a discontinued part. I bought a similar shaped water trap in GRP, Centek Vernalift low capacity from ASAP supplies. Part number C150038. They do a larger one which is 150039 but it wouldn't fit in my engine bay. I also bought a 45 degree fibreglass angle to line it up with the exhaust elbow. My exhaust pipe is 45mm internal diameter. I hope this helps.

hi - I am just buying a Bavaria 32 and the survey has thrown up a leaking exhaust water trap/muffler. Seems to be a common problem. I would like to replace with a plastic type having read the debate above - any idea what capacity it needs to be for a Volvo 2020 engine?

I have seen this one for £74 Waterlock 7L - For 50HP NA 08 - 12 - 2-05051 (marinestore.co.uk)

Seems like a good price compared to the vetus? But any good/ the correct size? If this marine store one is not any good what size vetus should I look at?

Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

That is fine, however, check the overall length and height if you want it to fit in exactly the same space using the same hoses. The nearest direct replacement is Vetus WLOCKLR 45mm. The original Volvo is 434mm body and 440mm total including the spigots which is 372mm long, so the aft hose has to be pulled forward a bit - there should be enough slack to do this. You also need to find a way of mounting it onto the bulkhead as obviously the Volvo mounts won't work. Although it does not give measurements, I suspect that 7l one will be too big, and that capacity is not necessary anyway.

Have you thought of having the Volvo one repaired? Usually they suffer from Crevice corrosion where the output spigot exits the aft end cap. mine failed there and although I had it replaced with a new Volvo because the dealer thought it would be covered by warranty, I had the old one welded up, cost less than £50.

hi Tranona - no hadnt considered a repair. I will take it apart and see how bad the corrossion is.

Just had a look on the volvo parts site below and the end caps seem to be no longer made. So looks like that option is out?

It looks like a repair or replace. I will look at repair first as that may be simpler as you suggest for cost and mounting, and may last another few years.

just bought the boat so have a few jobs from the survey to do!!

thanks for the help.

Worth joining this bavariayacht.org/forum/index.php very active as you can see.

Was not aware that the end caps were ever available. Golden Arrow was the dealer that replaced mine and never suggested just the end plate. The muffler is the same for all the under 40hp engines right up to present. You can see in the diagram the exit pipe sits in the water all the time and the weld where it meets the plate inside at the bottom is a pig to do properly and crevice corrosion starts there and eventually pin holes appear on the outside. Water gets sprayed out when the engine is running. Looks a mess and you get dirty seawater in the bilge area under the engine. The repair I had done was a plate over the lower part on the outside.

I had to deal with this problem in 2019. My boat was 19 years old at the time, and I presume the muffler was the original one, therefore confirming that their lifespan seems to be about 16-20 years. I was able to bodge a repair with epoxy putty to keep going until the replacement arrived. I had to replace it with like for like, as all of the better looking and less expensive Vetus ones were the wrong shape and size to fit into the moulded enclosure where it is designed to go in my Dufour 30 Classic. An epoxy putty repair like this would certainly get you home if the leak developed at sea.
I can't remember which of these Italian websites I ordered it from, but when it turned up, it had been made in Finland and posted in Belgium!

Same principle, but not the same physical size as the Volvo one, nor the same shape of outlet (the Volvo is angled up about 45 degrees). I expect the outlet gong straight through is easier to weld and will not be under water as I assume there is a right angle bend inside to take the pipe down below the water level. Similar (high) price though. The Volvo item is readily available in the UK from dealers.
