Westerlys now count as Classics - Fulmar destined for greatness

Sorry to hear you're in dry-dock Dylan, my sympathy is with you. I've had a similar issue and it's been with me for over a month!
Your films are a great comfort during this period, especially as the was little comfort from the Memsaab!
A prescription of hot whisky and a good women will help, or is that good whisky and a hot woman? I can never remember...........:encouragement:

Nobodies going to argue with that film Dylan even if you sailed it in a bath tub :D

Seriously though where was that film taken, was it all filmed in one place or cobbled together?

I love your films particularly of the wild places I just can't quite agree about what is the best example of British manufacturing......but then I have another brand

film started in Chich harbour, then clips from off scarborough, Moray firth, Shetland, Sound near Tonermory. I must be impressed wirth the centaurs because after selling the first one - because I promised the bloke who sold her to me for £1 that I would and then gave him half of the money.

I was really impressed with the way they deal with the rough stuff. We had a horrid night coming across the Pentland Firth - just a scrap of sail out - beam onish seas - beaking in places - tiller pilot in charge - bloomin fine boat for 26 feet. I think the westerly knuckle works wery well.

The wobbly keels are a problem but there are not amny around that have not been fixed. Blokes will still be sailing them in 200 years time I am sure of that

It was designed for UK conditions and I am confident that they have been in rougher conditions than I am ever likely to encounter.

So I bought a second one which I am currently sailing.

I have discovered that to get the best from them you do need to pay attention to sail trim.

I feel very sfe in them and for me the twin keels allow you to take advantage of shelter which is closed to boats that fall over.

I speak as a bloke who used to race Eboats and Sonatas - so I know they are no good for racing around the cans

but as a value for money cruising boat I really think they are hard to beat.

I hate the mast on centaur 2 - retro-fit in mast roller reefing

It has been suggested that I sail in a sombrero so that I do not have to look at the v ugly RR mainsail. I am also experimenting with becoming a pipe smoker.

Accommodation - unbeatable in the length. Five adults for three weeks. She swallowed us all and all our gear.

Did i hear that right: the guy in the interview said these boats are changing hands for a few hundred quid? Think it was a Pageant he said went for £350!

I think the whole 'GRP -> classic' movement is quite interesting. There as a post above about Nic 32s being admitted into Cowes Classics, and I think that this will become more normal as the numbers of affordable classic wooden boats decline. There have been endless articles about how you define a classic yacht, but I think that Nic 43s*, being early GRP boats, are beginning to gain momentum as a potential future classic. They were designed in 1969 along the forms of wooden yachts and often get mistaken for being wooden. In the last year or so the numbers available on the market have declined sharply, and are being snapped up by enthusiastic new owners, albeit not yet at high prices (echoing the first video that Dylan posted).

There were only 37 built (tick for future classic status?) and we know of 22 that have survived. A couple of new owners have built community web pages:

...and the hope is that they might more readily be admitted into 'Glassics' or Spirit of Tradition classes in the next few years.

Anyway, this is really just an excuse to post the links above so that people might enjoy some of the photos on the pages!

* declaration of interest - I own one!
