Westerly Typhoon

As it's another Ed Dubois design, I'd imagine that the experience is very similar to the Storm; fast and stands up well to a blow, prone to a little weather helm when over canvassed, a little sticky in light wind. I can't remember if the Typhoon is a centre cockpit or not; if it is that will make the perfomance a little poorer to weather. A strong and safe boat which will take a lot more bad weather than you will. As it's a Westerly, beware the collapsing/disintegrating headlining.

cheers,
David

I sail a 38` Westerly Oceanranger, centre cockpit. Fast sailer when in the groove and very comfortable. We had 40 knots of wind over deck recently and felt safe. Good upwind performance and fast downwind. We are ready for the atlantic.

I haven't sailed a Typhoon either, but I remember lusting after one to replace our Storm. I hope it's alright to reproduce this nice description from a review in the WOA newsletter some years ago:

'Ed Dubois' design brief was simply to buld a bigger better Fulmar. The result is wonderful. With just the odd ruffled patch on a glassy surface, she grabs the zephyr and leaps forward in just the way a Husky yelps and pulls at the traces for freedom of speed. In a blow she'll eat her way upwind with the same enthusiasm, before roaring off on a run or a reach like a clipper coming up the channel with the first tea of the season, surfing on every roller with the speedo straining at the stops. Wow!'

Only 40 were built by the way.

Yep, Got one, and love it.
What do you want to know?
Sails like a dream and very easily handled with just 2 of us.

The review on the WOA website is very informative.

I sailed one many years ago, was realy impressed. I very much liked the Typhoon and Storm design, wanted to own a Regatta 330, but never found one. So it was another Etap.

Saw a ketch rigged one couple of years ago----BOOOOOOTIFUL

Have just returned from 3 weeks in the West country aboard the Typhoon I bought in the spring. A novice crewman, my 2 young sons and I had some exhilarating sailing - even the 8 year old helmed us at hull speed for a short while. Have also had success club racing (4-5 up) and am delighted with performance and handling. Headlining has drooped or been replaced and the 9000hrs Volvo 2003 has also now been replaced. Would recommend a Typhoon to anyone who can find one! Quite a relaxing sail after my previous boats - an E-boat then a GK29.

We were there briefly to get fuel but were anchored in the Helfold river that night. Lovely spot and more to our liking than marina berthing.
