Westerly Storm vs Fulmar

If you were looking for a Westerly and you had a choice of two in identical condition and specification. One had the foam back vinyl replaced with more foam vinyl and the other had bamboo or bamboo panels. Which would you choose?

A couple of years ago I saw a Fulmar for sale online in Holland, it had ply wood panels throughout. It looked neat, but it just did not look right.

It depends on the finishing I guess. Personally the one thing I don't like about Westerlies is the lining, even as brand new. Not a big deal, but if I had to replace it myself I probably wouldn't go for the same thing.

Not a Westerly (Lynx 29) but I like this better:

We looked long and hard at several Storms, but by accident we came across a Bavaria 350 from 1994, didn't take us long to put an offer in.We never even went to look at the Westerly that we had driven 200 miles to see.Ticked all the boxes that the Westerly did,but with a far better specification, far more comfort and no saggy headlinings. Well worth a look.

I have sailed on a Storm and owned her smaller sister the Merlin, both excellent sea-boats. one word of warning you will need a blow to get her going. I currently have an MG335 and would say that she sails easier than the westerly's and doesn't need as much wind to pick up her skirt

Don't dismiss the Ocean 33 if it's in budget, there's at least one currently for sale on the WOA website. It has the aft cabin/heads arrangement and probably sails slightly better than a Fulmar, at least I usually seem to go past them in mine. It is billed as a fast cruiser, whereas the Storm was originally intended as a one design racer until the cruising version with the smaller rig came along.

The Fulmar fin keeler is supposed to be slightly faster. According to PY handicap at least.

That's only because you've never sailed next to my Fulmar the daddy of them all....:)

You show off. Just because you have hull number 1. Mine was number 7 out of the mould but has the sail number of 38. The answer why is on the Westerly forum.

Going back to the OP. His choice will be between what his wife wants from the interior and his budget. The Storm will be more expensive with better living accomodation, but the Fulmar will be the better sailing boat. Do come back with your thoughts.

I've never sailed the Storm but I can attest to the very good catachteristics of the Fulmar.I'd go for the Storm if interior space was a concern though.

The WOA yardstick gives 952 for the Ocean 33, 1000 for the Storm, 1006 for the Fulmar and 1060 for the Storm Cruiser. I don't know if these are more or less accurate figures than the PY.

Loved the fulmar. Spent a lot of time in one with the taller rig. Very nimble. Found the accommodation good in her as well. Depends what is more important, big grin on the sailing face, or a happy wifey! As with all, make sure the engine is top notch.........
