I met someone with one for sale and had a 'tyre kicking' look at it the other day 1975 vintage, tired condition. I don't know the yacht (other than checking out a few Google links to info. so I know they're bilged keeled and ketch rigged) and I'm not thinking of buying, but curious to know - What do people think of them? (this one was going pretty cheap for a 33' once-stylish boat, it seemed to me)

I love mine & so do the family. Had it since the early 90's which should tell you what we think of her. There were around 250 built from 1973- late 80's I think. Full details on the Westerly Owner's site. They also have a forum, but it is a little quieter than here!

Yes, they are starting to look a little dated now (mine is sail no 9, so a very early one) but she has been refurbished inside, well maintained & a recent new engine. Very comfortable accomodation & sailing, plenty of space & headroom in 3 cabins, but the aft cabing is small & only has 4'6" headroom - great for kids or as a captain's berth on passage (you are right next to the wheel & can respond to problems without getting out of your sleeping bag!)

Not the fastest, true, but not as slow as some people think & certainly suits us & what we like to do. Funny thing is there were equal numbers of the Berwick, Renown, Longbow & Pentland built, but you don't se that many Pentlands for sail & they seem to sell quite well. Prices? 15k for a poor one to 24k top whack for a good one with loads of eqt. BTW, the hull is 31' with an 18" bowsprit, not really a 33' boat!

Basically the aft cabin version of the slightly more popular Berwick

Bilge keels, can be ketch or sloop rigged

Fin keel versions are Longbow and the aft cabin Renown

Searush is your man to talk about the Pentland .. but he is very biassed :D

Around 250-300 of each were built between 1972 and 1980

Details will be found on the WOA website http://westerly-owners.co.uk/

They are 31 ft by the way. Only the ketches normally had the bowsprit
There was a Westerly 33 built 1977- 1980. Available in fin or twin keel version also with sloop or ketch rig options. W33 was superseded by the Discus 33

I bought a new one in 1978, and had a lot of fun with it for 5 years. By today's standards, it's rather narrow and doesn't sail particularly well. Quite heavily overbuilt, so fairly bulletproof and with care should last many more years.
