My next question was what sealant is best for this. I.e when the chainplate is bolted through the deck in this manner.

Moody I guess used a two part non adhesive type sealant. The remains were nice and easy to peel off thus making replacement easy.

I'll not say for now what I've used but I didn't want anything like PU40 or CT1 for fear of having to physically remove it in ten years time when time comes to check again.

I agree entirely. The boat has a teak deck with the upper part of the chainplate on top of it, although the real issue to my mind is the total absence of sealant. In Greece it does not remain wet too long but this is the perfect condition for SCC, evaporation concentrating the chlorides.
The boat is 1990 build. The rig has been checked electronically twice but of course this does not include chainplates.
Exclude water and life is indefinite.

Surely the wood will be soaked anyway? Also, a layer of sealant thick enough to cope with that much movement isn't really compatible with torquing up those bolts.

Mind you the fitting outlasted the builder!

Personally I am a fan of polysulphides such as Boatlife Caulk or Arbokol but butyl would also be suitable.

By a remarkable coincidence I re-bedded one of my lower chainplates today and one of the underdeck bolts had also failed by SCC.
