Westerly Longbow 31

I am thinking of purchasing a 1971 Westerly Longbow 31. What should I be carefull about? Did the hull use a wood core? Is the Longbow really a '72? (I read that they started manufacturing in '72.) It seems that Westerly makes a superior craft but it is over 35 years old. Please help me. howardclemenko@verizon.net
 
Yes Longbow and Renown (the aft cabin version) were made from 72 to 80 and the twin keelers, Berwick and Pentland, from 73 to 80 according to the website. Possible that production started in 71 maybe for the Jan 72 boat show. The sail number should give you a pretty good idea! Also the hull number on the transom and the yard number on the plate under the hatch might help if anyone can interpret them.

Solidly built no wooden cores to the best of my knowledge. Sail better than they look as though they might.

I crewed a Berwick for many years (owner sadly died this year) and cannot think of any particular failing to warn you of that would not apply to any boat of that age.

In addition to the website there is a good Owners Association forum and a very active Yahoo group.
 
And of course, as with all Westerlys of that period, they were built to Lloyds specifications which meant that the building processes were rigorously monitored and all materials had to be approved by Lloyds in order that a certificate could be issued.

[/ QUOTE ] You are right about them being moulded to Lloyds specification but I do not think that means that the moulding of each hull was supervised by Lloyds or that it was inspected by them.
