Hi - I am facing a bit of a conundrum in choosing between a Westerly Konsort or a Sadler 29, both twin-keelers. I understand that the Sadler is considered a better sailer, but the accommodation on both (we have viewed some) are similar.

This is the first yacht my wife and I have bought; she is a novice, I am more experienced. We may be based on the East Coast (Crouch/Deben) area. No long trips planned in the near future and definitely no racing.

Any thoughts (I have looked through other threads as well - but if I've missed any, please point them out to me.) (Also, cross posted to PBO forum)

Thanks,

Andy

Either will do the job you want. They were direct competitors when they were new so not surprising they are both on the same short list now. They each have their strengths and weaknesses and you have identified two - accommodation and performance, with the Konsort majoring on accommodation. The Sadler is significantly smaller and has less room inside because of its method of construction.

When you get to boats of this age that are broadly similar in function the key criterion in choice is condition - getting the best boat in terms of sails, engine, equipment etc for your money as rectifying shortcomings in these areas is financially out of proportion to purchase costs.

You will obviously get advice from people who own these boats, maybe even have experience of both, but it is you that has to make the choice, probably based on the one that shouts to you "this is the boat for me" when you see it!

A Sadler 29 (fin) was my first boat 15 years ago and I love it to bits...

As said with boats of this age it's condition that will be important. The Sadler has the double skin which keeps the boats warm and dry in winter but do check for any osmosis and look inside the covers behind the head and wet locker where you can see the the foam and check its dry.

My Sadler has looked after me and in turn I try to look after her. Feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss further.

I had a Sadler 29 for 5 years, and have also sailed a Konsort, and I'd say that's a fair summing-up.

A boat of similar vintage and price is the Moody 29, also available as a twin keeler. I have owned one and would choose it over the Konsort as it has roomier accommodation, (and loads more room than the Sadler). It is faster than it looks, especially off the wind. I agree that as a purely sailing boat the Sadler is better, but would trade that against the liveability of the Moody as a comfortable cruiser.
