Hi im wanting to change the 2 blade prop to a 3 blade on my Konsort ,can any one tell me what the correct pitch and diameter should be as im sure there is a standard ball part area on this as they are quite simple, but dont want to buy the wrong one.
Any info on your sizes in relation to speed /rpm etc would be a help.

I have 18hp volvo 2002 engine.

Regards

peter

You can either work out the size yourself using the Propcalc programme on www.castlemarine.co.uk or better still provide your boat's details to a reputable prop supplier and they will calculate (or already know) the correct size. Then if it is wrong (unlikely) it is their responsibility.

A three blade prop will give you better thrust when motoring against the waves, but will also give you more drag when sailing. If you are buying a new prop I suggest raiding the piggy bank for a folding or feathering one. Darglow Engineering were very helpful when I replaced my prop (I bought a Max Prop as I needed a 21 inch diameter) but their Featherstream might be a good choice for you. http://www.darglow.co.uk/Propellers/FeatherStream/index.html

Hello Peter

We have a Westerly Konsort (but with a Bukh DV24) and had the same thought about going for a fixed three blade... but in the end, we changed the 2 blade egg whisk (14"x13) for a 2 blade flexofold (16"x12) supplied by Darglow in the UK. If you can afford the extra, you will be rewarded with both more powerful motoring and quicker sailing. We have gained at least half a knot on both. Darglow worked out the size and matched up the new with the old to fit our shaft (the tapers vary on Konsorts!) Picture below of old and new speaks for it's self.

Edit: I should add that the prop has been a joy to use, it's better going astern than the old and has less prop walk. We have been very pleased with it!

Westerly Konsort Prop Size

We've got a 1984 Konsort KT553 with BUKH DV20 engine and 14" twin blade.

We have a max clearance of only 1" between the blade and the hull ( fin running to rudder). I've measured other Konsorts and they have plenty of room for a 16" as Stuey has mentioned. These had a longer P-Bracket and the shaft was angled more. So don't assume all are the same, the only way is to measure it.
