Can anyone who has recently replaced the stern gland packing on their Griffon give me an idea of what possible size packing I need?
I know its a "how long is a piece of string" type question, but I haven't had a chance to measure shaft diameter and the stern gland packing nut inside diameter, so if anyone can suggest a possible size, I'd go and buy lengths of packing material in sizes up and down from the size suggested.
I would guess the shaft is either 25 or 30mm diameter (it has been replaced when the previous owner changed the old Volvo unit for a new D1-13 engine) The stern gland is the type with an oval fixing flange with a spigot and is tightened up with 2 x bolts on either side of the flange. The assembly is fed from a remote greaser.

I'd be happy to buy 6mm, 8mm and 10mm packing if I could get a rough idea on sizing, but if the original was say 12mm, I'd get sizes up/down from that.

Thanks.
