I am considering buying a westerly Griffon circa 1980, how would I know if the bilge keels have been modified or reinforced as I have heard the early ones had problems. Are there any areas of concern I should be aware off, As this is going to be our first boat (maybe our last).

Hi, I have a 1981 Griffon (GN295) and had the keels done when I bought her 11 years ago.

Basically they chap ground out around the keel bolts and glassed in extra layup. All that you see is slightly different colour bilge paint. Not had a problem since.

I would be very surprised if any Griffon has not been done by now, but any good surveyor should be able to tell.

They are fantastic boats, great fun, and easy to sail.

If you are in the Poole area you are welcome to come for a test sail....
