The anchor locker drains into the bilges which, as it's a bilge keeler with no sump, leaves water and other bits that come up with the anchor slopping about under the floor and making smells.
The lowest point of the locker ends in a point so the only option for a normal external drain would be forward facing through the stem and only about 9" above the waterline. I think this would fill the anchor locker faster than it could drain when beating to windward.
I've wondered about fitting a hose to the internal drain and leading it to some kind of container mounted in the forward locker which I could empty after stowing the anchor.
Has anyone come across a similar problem and come up with a more ingenious solution.
 
If you put the drain hole to one side of the bow, you can put a clam shell device like this one facing aft over the hole. I have seen boats so fitted with this cover.

On our Duo, the drain hole for the anchor winch locker is quite high up on the bow, and going into heavy weather, we have had water getting into the anchor winch locker, but never getting into the anchor locker below - 'cos I have checked where it would end up, and has been dry.
 
If your locker is anything like mine (Fulmar) I don't think an external drain is a good idea.You'll be opening a hole in the hull into a compartment that leads to the acomodation.Could even sink the boat.On my boat I made a new SS hawse pipe with a threaded cap that has a loop welded on the inside.Everytime I go to sea I disconnect the chain and tie it to the cap with a short thin line.Not pratical but at least I have a dry boat.The original arrangement is stupid to say the least.Imagine putting a hole at the wettest part of a boat.Fine for ships but a terrible idea for a small yacht.

What a nicely thought-out mod!
Were it my Westerly, I'd block up the internal drain- maybe some chop-strand and flo-cote- and I'd put in the external weep-hole with the eyebrow-magodie over it. If you pay 2 quid for the fitting you're being ripped off. The only other mod I'd do is to put a piece of perforated plastic duck-board onto the bottom of the anchor-well. 1/2-way across, we discovered we were wearing 2 tonnes of freshly-deposited south Atlantic in our anchor-well because of a fossilised sponge stopping the well draining. Otherwise, I've never had a single problem with open wells with weep-holes.
 
Our Griffon's anchor locker doesn't drain at all, and I've wondered about similar modifications. I think draining to the bilge is a really bad idea.

How is yours actually laid out? Behind our anchor locker there's a small triangular space under the bunks and forward of the main central under-bunk space. I vaguely considered allowing the anchor locker to drain into that small space, which could then be fairly easily mopped out. We don't get much water down the chain pipe.
 
Ours boat is a MkII 1983
The locker finishes in a point (bottom of an inverted pyramid so to speak) at the same level as the forward berth. It just has a hole which drains straight into the under berth locker and from there into the bilges.
